About The Role
The Senior Database & ETL Engineer is responsible for the operational management, performance, resilience, and security of the organisation’s database platforms, primarily Microsoft SQL Server & Teradata alongside the development and support of ETL/ELT and data integration solutions.
The role ensures high availability, disaster recovery, data integrity, and optimal performance of critical systems, including replication, failover, backup, and recovery processes, and takes ownership of database-related incident response and recovery where required.
Working across database administration and engineering, the role designs, develops, supports ETL/ELT solutions, using SSIS where appropriate alongside SQL/T-SQL and other integration technologies, ensuring reliable movement and transformation of data across operational, warehousing, analytics, and reporting platforms.
The role will also support the evolution and modernisation of the data platform. Teradata experience is highly desirable, with experience of other large-scale enterprise or MPP data platforms also beneficial. Exposure to Microsoft Fabric and the wider Azure data ecosystem would be advantageous as the organisation evolves its data platform.
Please note that the role expectation is to act as part of out of hours (OOH) third line support group in case of operational failures. OOH time that can be claimed as overtime or time off in lieu.

- Collaborate with application, data engineering, and analytics teams to promote efficient data access patterns and minimise database contention
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across database and ETL/ELT workloads, including blocking, deadlocks, long-running queries, and resource contention
- Establish and promote best practices for SQL development, database design, data modelling, and production support

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
