Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Database & BI Engineer to take ownership of our reporting and data solutions while providing senior-level SQL Server development and dependable operational cover for our database estate.
This is a hands-on role combining database engineering, business intelligence, data integration, and applied AI-assisted practice. The successful candidate will have strong experience across SQL Server, SSRS, Power BI, and data warehousing, together with sufficient production database administration experience to maintain essential services when the DBA is unavailable.
The role requires an experienced practitioner who can operate independently following an appropriate induction and handover. It is not a developmental SQL position. The successful candidate will also bring practical experience of AI-assisted working and ideas for applying AI safely and productively across database, reporting, and data-engineering activities.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting and Business Intelligence
- Own the design, development, and ongoing improvement of reporting and business intelligence solutions.
- Develop and enhance SSRS reports and Power BI dashboards for operational and strategic use.
- Work directly with stakeholders to translate business requirements into accurate, timely, and actionable reporting.
- Promote consistent reporting standards, data definitions, and trusted sources of information.
- Provide training and guidance to business users and engineering colleagues where appropriate.
- Improve access to information through effective self-service reporting capabilities.
Data Warehousing and Integration
- Design, develop, and maintain data warehouse solutions supporting enterprise reporting and analytics.
- Build and support ETL and data-integration processes using Azure Data Factory.
- Implement and maintain Change Data Capture processes supporting data movement and reporting requirements.
- Integrate Salesforce data into reporting, warehousing, and analytics solutions.
- Maintain appropriate standards of data quality, consistency, traceability, and accessibility.
Database Development and Performance
- Develop, maintain, and support T-SQL scripts, stored procedures, and database objects.
- Design and implement schema changes supporting new application features and technical improvements.
- Diagnose and resolve database-related incidents, defects, and production issues.
- Tune queries and investigate performance using Query Store, Extended Events, and execution-plan analysis.
- Recommend and implement appropriate indexing, schema, and query improvements.
- Produce safe, repeatable database deployment, release, and rollback scripts.
- Work within Git-based source control and established Azure DevOps delivery pipelines.

Database Platform Support
- Provide competent operational cover for the production SQL Server and Azure SQL Managed Instance estate when the DBA is unavailable.
- Monitor database health and availability and complete routine operational checks during periods of cover.
- Support backup, restore, and disaster-recovery testing.
- Rebuild and refresh database environments when required.
- Support database security, user access, and permissions management.
- Work within documented operational procedures, handover arrangements, and escalation paths.
- Identify and escalate database-platform risks or issues requiring specialist DBA ownership.
The DBA retains primary ownership of database platform administration. This role provides continuity and capable operational cover without duplicating that ownership.
AI-Augmented Data Practice
- Use AI coding assistants and agentic tools as a normal part of database, reporting, and data-engineering work, applying appropriate technical review and validation.
- Identify practical opportunities to use AI to improve data quality, engineering productivity, reporting, and access to information.
- Explore responsible uses of natural-language and AI-assisted query capabilities across the reporting and data estate.
- Establish safe validation approaches for AI-proposed schema changes, indexing, query rewrites, reports, and data pipelines.
- Evaluate where AI tooling is—and is not—improving quality, safety, and delivery outcomes.
- Share effective AI-assisted data-engineering practices with the wider engineering team.
Business and Ad-Hoc Data Support
- Support Product Owners and business stakeholders with data analysis, extracts, and reporting requests.
- Perform controlled bulk updates and corrective data changes where required.
- Investigate and resolve ad-hoc data issues affecting business operations.
- Provide technical guidance and data insight to support product and business decisions.
- Reduce recurring ad-hoc requests through self-service reporting, automation, and AI-assisted data-access tools.
Essential Experience and Skills
- Substantial commercial experience with SQL Server, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and T-SQL.
- Strong database development skills, including stored procedures, schema design, indexing, and performance optimisation.
- Hands-on experience supporting a production SQL Server estate, including monitoring, security, backup, restore, and incident response.
- Demonstrable experience developing and supporting SSRS reports and Power BI solutions.
- Experience designing and maintaining data warehouses and ETL/data-integration processes.
- Practical experience with Azure Data Factory and Change Data Capture.
- Experience integrating Salesforce or comparable enterprise application data into reporting and analytics solutions.
- Experience using Query Store, Extended Events, and execution plans to diagnose performance issues.
- Experience with Git-based source control and Azure DevOps delivery pipelines.
- Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools and agentic workflows in database, BI, or data-engineering work.
- Sound judgement when reviewing and validating AI-generated database, reporting, and pipeline changes.
- Ability to identify valuable and responsible applications of AI within the data domain.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership, and provide dependable operational cover.

Highly Desirable Experience
- Exposure to MySQL database environments, reflecting the wider divisional database landscape and potential for cross-team operational cover.
- Familiarity with AWS and its data-related services, relevant to cross-platform operational support beyond the core Azure/SQL Server estate.
Desirable Experience
- Experience developing self-service or natural-language data-query capabilities.
- Experience training or mentoring colleagues and business users in reporting, data, or technical tools.
Key Working Relationships
- DBA: Reports to the DBA, who retains primary ownership of database platform administration; provides agreed operational cover during periods of absence.
- Lead Developer: Works within engineering-wide development, quality, and AI standards and contributes data-domain learning and good practice.
- Software Development Manager: Provides technical input on data-platform risks, capacity, delivery, and the effectiveness of AI adoption.
- Product Owners and business stakeholders: Acts as a senior technical contact for reporting, data analysis, extracts, and data-informed decision support.
Given the primarily remote nature of the role, proactive communication and availability during core hours are expected to maintain effective working relationships with the above.
