Job Description – PostgreSQL DBA
Role: Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator (PostgreSQL DBA)
Experience: 8-10+ Years
Location: Hybrid Sheffield
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced PostgreSQL DBA to manage, optimise, secure, and support enterprise PostgreSQL environments. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in database administration, performance tuning, high availability, disaster recovery, and cloud database platforms. Experience in Banking or Financial Services will be a strong advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and administer PostgreSQL databases across development, testing, and production environments.
- Perform database installation, upgrades, patching, and migrations.
- Monitor database health, performance, storage, and capacity planning.
- Optimise SQL queries, indexes, execution plans, partitioning, and database performance.
- Design and maintain High Availability (HA), replication, backup, and disaster recovery solutions.
- Implement database security, user management, auditing, and compliance controls.
- Provide L2/L3 production support, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
- Automate database administration tasks using scripting and Infrastructure as Code.
- Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and DevOps teams on deployments and database releases.
- Ensure database reliability, scalability, and operational excellence.

Required Skills
- 8-10+ years of Database Administration experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL Administration.
- Expertise in:
- PostgreSQL Performance Tuning
- Query Optimisation
- Backup & Recovery
- Logical & Streaming Replication
- High Availability & Disaster Recovery
- Database Security & Access Management
- Strong Linux Administration experience.
- Shell Scripting (Bash) and Python scripting.
- Experience with one or more cloud platforms:
- AWS RDS PostgreSQL / Aurora PostgreSQL
- Azure Database for PostgreSQL
- Google Cloud SQL PostgreSQL
- Experience with monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and pgAdmin.
- Knowledge of CI/CD, automation, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred).

Preferred Skills
- Banking, Financial Services, Insurance, or other regulated industry experience.
- Experience with Patroni, PgBouncer, Pgpool-II, or similar HA solutions.
- Kubernetes and containerised PostgreSQL deployments.
- Experience managing large-scale, high-volume transactional databases.
- PostgreSQL certification is desirable.
