Senior Decision Scientist | SME Lending
Birmingham based role - Up to £75K
I'm currently recruiting for a Senior Decision Scientist to join a growing financial services business, working at the forefront of SME lending and automated credit decisioning.
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to take ownership of the full model lifecycle from identifying the problem and building models through to deployment, monitoring and optimisation - while working closely with Data, Risk and Product teams.
What you'll be doing
- Develop and deploy ML and statistical models across credit risk, affordability and pricing
- Own models end-to-end, including data, feature engineering, modelling, validation, deployment and monitoring
- Build model monitoring frameworks and performance dashboards
- Explore new data sources, challenger models and A/B testing to improve decisioning
- Turn complex analysis into clear, commercially focused insights
- Work closely with both technical and senior business stakeholders to influence lending strategy

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
