Senior Design Engineer

About The Role
AmcoGiffen is seeking a motivated and forward-thinking Senior Design Engineer to join our expanding in-house design team in York. With secured work now confirmed in the current financial year and a strong pipeline for 2027, this is an exciting time to join a growing, future-focused engineering function.
You’ll contribute to a diverse range of civil and structural engineering projects across the rail and general civil engineering sectors. Current and upcoming opportunities include leading design work on several Access for All (AfA) schemes, supporting civils elements of national EV charging station programmes, and playing a key role in design management activities for our bid teams. Alongside these, you’ll work on bridge reconstructions, station enhancements and major infrastructure upgrades delivered through long-term frameworks with key clients.
This role offers the chance to work on meaningful, high-impact projects while developing your technical expertise and leadership capability in a supportive, inclusive and collaborative environment.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Develop creative, robust engineering solutions that meet budget, quality and programme expectations.
- Apply sound engineering judgement to propose and refine design options.
- Challenge and shape project briefs to support the development of clear, effective solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
- Produce and check designs in line with current Codes of Practice and Standards.
- Prepare clear calculations, reports and sketches that communicate design intent effectively.
- Share design philosophies and requirements with colleagues, clients and wider project teams.
- Represent the design team at internal and external meetings.
- Maintain focus on financial performance, quality standards and programme delivery.
- Promote safe working practices across all aspects of design and delivery.
- Support and guide colleagues, contributing to team development and project success.
- Lead design activities on AfA schemes and support civils design for EV charging programmes.
- Support bid teams with design management input, helping shape winning proposals.

What You’ll Bring
- A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (BSc / BEng / CEng).
- Proven experience as a Senior Design Engineer within a rail project environment.
- Strong civil and structural design experience, ideally including bridges, stations, platforms and associated infrastructure.
- Chartered status or clear progress toward membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., ICE, IStructE).
- Experience gained in client, contractor or consultancy settings within rail, civil or structural engineering.
- A collaborative mindset and a commitment to delivering high-quality, safe engineering solutions.
- An interest in contributing to emerging areas such as AfA schemes, EV charging infrastructure and design management for bids.
