Senior Design Engineer – Structural Steel
📍 Wakefield, West Yorkshire
💼 Permanent | Full Time – 37.5 hours
💰 Competitive salary, depending on experience
A structural steel design isn't finished when the calculations balance.
It has to stand, it has to be buildable, it has to work with the fabrication process and it has to make sense commercially.
That's where this role comes in.
As Senior Design Engineer, you'll be responsible for developing safe, efficient and practical structural engineering solutions across a varied portfolio of steel projects.
You'll work from early design concepts through to detailed engineering, making decisions that directly influence how the finished structure will be manufactured and constructed.
The Role
You'll work closely with clients, engineers, project teams and other professionals, taking construction drawings and specifications and turning them into practical structural solutions.
- Develop designs using industry-standard software
- Apply loadings, calculate stresses and load paths
- Ensure structures meet the required technical, legal and safety standards

You'll also contribute to tenders and bids, provide technical input throughout projects and keep clients and senior management updated on progress.
The work will cover everything from straightforward building frames through to more complex structural steel projects, so you'll need to be comfortable dealing with different design challenges rather than working from the same template every time.
What You'll Bring
- Strong knowledge of structural mechanics and engineering principles
- Significant experience working within a structural design environment
- Strong design calculation and analytical ability
- Experience with structural engineering software such as:
- Tekla Structural Designer / Fastrak Building Designer
- Fastrak Portal Frame
- STAAD Pro
- Masterseries / Masterframe
- Masterseries Connections
- Experience with structural steel design
- Connection design experience would be advantageous
- Ability to communicate confidently with clients, colleagues and wider project teams
- Strong understanding of buildability, compliance and practical engineering
