Senior Design Engineer – Temporary Works
Location: Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Join an Established and Growing Temporary Works Design Team
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Design Engineer (Temporary Works) to join our established in-house Temporary Works Design team based in Barnsley.
As our project portfolio continues to grow, we are expanding the team to provide additional technical capability and support an increasing workload across rail, civil engineering and infrastructure projects. This role will be instrumental in delivering innovative and practical temporary works solutions that enable the safe and efficient delivery of construction, maintenance and enhancement schemes nationwide.
Working within a specialist design environment, you will support a wide variety of projects including rail infrastructure renewals, bridge works, station upgrades, earthworks, structures and major multidisciplinary civil engineering programmes.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically capable engineer looking to combine engineering expertise, project responsibility and team leadership within a well-established and highly respected Temporary Works Design team.

About The Team
Our in-house Design & Engineering function delivers specialist engineering solutions across a wide range of rail and civil engineering projects throughout the UK.
The Temporary Works Design team supports both rail and non-rail infrastructure projects, providing innovative and buildable solutions that enable safe project delivery. Working closely with operational teams, clients and stakeholders, the team is responsible for developing temporary works designs from concept through to implementation across a broad range of engineering challenges.
Typical projects include:
- Bridge reconstruction, refurbishment and replacement schemes
- Station and platform works
- Access for All projects
- Earthworks and geotechnical schemes
- Structural modifications and asset renewals
- Temporary support works
- Excavation and retention systems
- Construction staging and access solutions
- Multi-disciplinary rail infrastructure projects
The Role
Reporting to the Principal Engineer, the Senior Design Engineer is responsible for the development of technical solutions, programme and budgetary control, SHEQ considerations, and the coaching and mentoring of colleagues.
As a senior member of the Temporary Works Design team, you will lead the development and checking of engineering solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects, ensuring designs are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with client requirements, industry standards and commercial objectives.
You will also work closely with engineers, technicians, project teams and clients, providing technical leadership while supporting the continued growth and development of the design team.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of innovative temporary works solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
- Challenge project briefs and identify practical, efficient and buildable engineering solutions.
- Design and check temporary works engineering solutions across rail and civil engineering projects.
- Produce clear, consistent and fully referenced engineering calculations, reports and sketches.
- Lead site inspections and surveys to inform engineering solutions.
- Produce and maintain Designer's Risk Assessments and Decision Logs.
- Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, Safe by Design principles and company SHEQ requirements.
- Manage project delivery against programme, quality and budget objectives.
- Support the CRE (Design) function on relevant Network Rail schemes.
- Mentor and develop Design Engineers, Assistant Engineers and Trainee Engineers.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders and project teams.
- Support innovation, technical excellence and continuous improvement throughout the design function.
- Contribute to business planning, resource management and the successful delivery of framework commitments.
What We're Looking For
We're seeking a motivated and experienced engineer with strong temporary works expertise and a passion for delivering high-quality engineering solutions in complex project environments.
Essential Requirements
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a recognised Engineering Institution.
- Proven experience in the design of civil engineering structures/temporary works, with the technical capability, leadership potential and professional maturity to operate successfully at Senior Design Engineer level.
- Significant experience in the design of temporary works solutions within rail and civil engineering projects.
- Experience in bridges, structures, earthworks, stations, platforms and associated infrastructure works.
- Experience undertaking design checking and technical assurance activities.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, construction methodologies and buildability considerations.
- Knowledge of British Standards, Eurocodes and relevant industry design standards.
- Experience working on multidisciplinary projects involving interfaces with E&P, Signalling, Telecoms, P-Way and OLE disciplines.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management and supervisory skills.
- Commercial awareness with experience managing project delivery requirements.
Desirable
- Experience undertaking CRE (Design) responsibilities within a rail environment.
- Detailed knowledge of CDM Regulations and temporary works governance.
- Experience working within contractor, client or consultancy environments.
- Sentinel Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification.
- Experience working within BIM-led project environments.
