Role Overview

Knights Brown is an independent civil engineering contractor delivering complex projects across energy, water utilities, infrastructure, coasts & ports, and buildings.

We are looking for a Senior Design Manager to lead the development, management and assurance of engineering solutions across some of the UK's most challenging civil engineering, marine, coastal and infrastructure projects.

You will play a pivotal role in shaping projects from tender stage through to delivery, ensuring solutions are safe, buildable, sustainable and represent best value for both our clients and project teams. Working closely with pre-construction and operational teams, you will ensure designs are safe, buildable, sustainable and deliver best value for both our customers and project teams. You will provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle, from tender development through to project delivery, ensuring engineering excellence and successful project outcomes.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Provide technical leadership on design and build projects, contractor-designed elements and complex temporary works
  • Support bid and work-winning teams with design strategy, consultant appointments, technical submissions and construction methodologies
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams to deliver integrated, buildable and cost-effective solutions
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, client requirements and statutory obligations

  • Champion compliance with CDM Regulations and proactively manage design-related health and safety risks
  • Oversee the performance of external consultants and construction partners to ensure high-quality design outputs
  • Support operational teams in resolving technical challenges during project delivery
  • Promote right-first-time design quality and continuous improvement across projects
  • Contribute to Knights Brown's sustainability objectives and support achievement of Goal13 commitments.
  • Mentor graduates and junior staff members

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
