The Role

As a Senior Design Safety Engineer, you will be leading development and delivery of the Safety Case that supports the Design Certification or Safety of Flight declaration (Permit to Fly).

Day-to-day, the role requires management of the safety programme including support to project bid activities, leading hazard identification activities and generating and managing programme safety plans for a wide range of Aircraft Modification, commercial equipment and test instrumentation integration (for aviation and other applications), and ground support equipment tasks.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Technically leading project safety activities including hazard identification, risk analysis and management
  • Preparing safety and risk management documentation required to support certification, or safety of flight (Permit to Fly (PtF)) activities
  • Establish the safety and risk management philosophy to meet customer, technical, environmental, operational, safety and regulatory requirements
  • Interpret and align requirements and regulatory constraints to support, with the appropriate safety and risk management
  • Maintenance of a hazards and controls register

Essential experience of the Senior Design Safety Engineer:

  • Technical report writing, specifically for the generation of Safety Case reporting and advice
  • Safety requirement generation and management
  • Understanding of Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and able to interrogate and review FTA to support safety arguments
  • Has a good knowledge and understanding of Regulatory and Governance of the design process
  • Is familiar with which safety engineering tools can be used at particular stages of a project lifecycle
  • Understanding of statistical approaches to Safety

Essential qualifications for the Senior Design Safety Engineer:

  • Master’s degree in safety or aviation related disciplines, or equivalent (HNC/HND/level of experience to deem an equivalent level of knowledge)

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Boscombe Down site with a minimum average site attendance of three to four days per week. Flexible working and compressed hours available.

Boscombe Down

MOD Boscombe Down is a unique operational site featuring the longest military runway in the UK. Primarily focusing on providing testing, evaluation and support services for aviation and aerospace systems. Renowned for its extensive flight testing capabilities the site plays a vital role in the UK’s aviation defence contributing to the development, testing and airworthiness of military aircraft enhancing operational readiness and effectiveness.

Please note that all applicants for this role must be eligible for SC clearance, as a minimum.
