Senior Developer – Java & Spring
Salary: £60,000–£70,000 per annum
Location: Remote, with one day per month onsite in Manchester
We’re recruiting a Senior Developer to join an established software business building and improving products for a growing customer base.
This role has a strong backend focus, using Java and Spring to deliver reliable, maintainable software. You’ll join a collaborative Scrum team that values technical ownership, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
Experience working in a test-driven development (TDD) environment is essential.
The role
- Design, develop, and maintain backend applications and services using Java and Spring.
- Work closely with product specialists, UX designers, and Test Analysts to turn customer requirements into effective technical solutions.
- Apply TDD, automated testing, and continuous integration to deliver high-quality software.
- Contribute to technical design decisions and solve complex engineering challenges.
- Participate in pair programming and code reviews, sharing knowledge and supporting other developers.
- Help improve development practices, application performance, and maintainability.

What we’re looking for
- Strong commercial experience in backend development using Java and the Spring framework.
- Proven experience working in a TDD environment, including writing automated tests as part of the development process.
- Experience working within Agile teams, with an understanding of Scrum and XP practices.
- A collaborative approach to pair programming, code reviews, and problem-solving.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical ideas clearly.
- The initiative to take ownership of technical challenges and contribute to the wider team’s development.

Desirable experience
- AWS services and cloud-native or serverless application development.
- CI/CD tooling, including Jenkins.
- Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Terragrunt.
- Exposure to React and TypeScript.
You’ll have the opportunity to influence technical decisions, develop your expertise, and contribute to new features and products within an established engineering team.
