Job Summary

We are currently looking for a Senior Developer (SQ Web) to join our Technology and Service Operations Function within the Digital and Technology Group.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in 7/8 Wellington Place, Leeds, LS1 4AP.

Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.

We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 12 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly. Remote working is potentially available for some specific roles. Please discuss this with the recruiting manager before accepting an appointment.

The MHRA Digital and Technology Group (DTG) exists to help protect and improve public health by enabling the Agency to become a modern, intelligence-led regulator.

We bring together digital, data, technology, cyber security and artificial intelligence expertise to deliver services, platforms and insights that support the regulation of medicines, medical devices and healthcare technologies across the UK.

Our work goes beyond traditional IT. We design and deliver user-centred services, harness trusted data, apply advanced analytics and responsible AI, and build secure, resilient digital foundations that help the MHRA make better decisions, work more effectively and respond to a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

The Technology & Service Operations (TSO) function is responsible for managing the existing IT infrastructure including both software and hardware, databases, and other technology platforms; leading the support and maintenance of applications; development and testing of new applications and platforms; and cyber and information security for the Agency.

The Engineering team, made up of software developers, DevOps engineers, Quality Assurance testers, and data professionals (including engineers, scientists, and visualization experts), is tasked with the creation of applications and services, ensuring quality for both new and existing agency offerings, and developing data visualizations through their expertise in data engineering and science.

Role Purpose

This Senior Developer role implements web applications and guides the ways in which the team works and provide technical leadership, to deliver cloud native web-based solutions to our end users. The post holder will be proficient in a wide range of technical systems and be involved in identifying appropriate technology and approaches, deciding when software should be written and will contribute to the developer community and promote knowledge sharing and adoption of good practice.

The post holder will work in cross-functional product squads on the design and development of creating cloud native (Azure), JavaScript based microservices (node.js) and front end (react) utilising agile (SAFe), paired programming, TDD and DevOps.

Key Responsibilities And Results Areas

  • As an experienced voice in the technical team, you will steer implementation and code design decisions for contingent labour and service providers
  • Mentoring more junior members of your team to develop and maintain high-performance, scalable solutions
  • Assist in leading the design and development of site/software projects following best practices, as well as regular status reporting
  • Assist in leading in optimising, debugging, and enhancing existing software whilst preventing regression in live systems
  • You must have solid JavaScript coding skills, experience of TDD/BDD (jest, enzyme, cucumber, gherkin), be collaborative (Jira, Confluence, GitHub)
  • You will establish good engineering practices and have strong ability with Open Source, Cloud First, Microservices and DevOps principles and its associated technology like React, Next.js, Node.js, Rust, Azure services (AKS, CosmosDB, Blob Storage, Functions), Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, dynamic planning process - prioritising the work that needs to be done against the capacity and capability of the team ensuring the smooth and successful development of sites/software.

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • You will hold a Computer Science or similar engineering degree, ideally hold a post-graduate qualification, or equivalent industry experience.
  • You will ideally hold certifications with a major cloud provider (preferably in Azure) and as a microservice based full stack JavaScript developer.
  • You will have previous experience as a developer working in a DDaT environment working on workstreams specific to the regulation of medicines/devices data and its subsequent caseworking.
  • Substantial experience with certain tools and associated engineering processes.

  • Annual Leave: 25 days annual leave on entry, rising by one day for each completed year of service to a maximum of 30 days and pro-rata for part-time staff. PLUS 8 bank holidays
