Overview

We are looking for a Senior Digital Systems Engineer (Digital Ship) to help shape and deliver digital capability across current and future naval programmes.

This is a broad systems engineering and architecture role covering onboard digital infrastructure, edge computing, communications, data handling, platform integration, digital twin capability and autonomy enablers. You will turn strategic digital objectives into practical architectures, requirements, interfaces, standards and integration plans.

Working across multidisciplinary engineering teams and external suppliers, you will help ensure that platform digital capability is coherent, secure, supportable and ready for integration, test and commissioning.

This role would suit an experienced systems engineer, digital architect or integration lead who is comfortable working across software, networks, data, automation and physical platform systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the digital ship strategy and digital systems architecture for current and future naval platforms.
  • Define, manage and decompose system requirements into clear, verifiable technical solutions.
  • Lead the design of onboard digital systems, including computing, networks, communications, data management and digital services.
  • Define and manage interfaces between digital systems, platform systems, sensors, automation, IPMS and external environments.
  • Develop platform data architectures, digital engineering approaches and digital twin capabilities to support operational and lifecycle objectives.
  • Conduct architecture trade studies, technical assessments and design reviews to inform programme decisions.
  • Lead the integration, verification, validation and commissioning of digital capabilities across shore and onboard environments.
  • Ensure requirements, architecture baselines, interfaces and technical documentation remain under configuration control.
  • Apply cyber security, software assurance, safety and supportability principles throughout the engineering lifecycle.
  • Provide technical leadership for suppliers and programme teams, including risk management, technical governance and engineering best practice.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent professional experience in Systems Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Communications Engineering or a related subject.
  • Evidence of continued professional development in systems engineering, software-intensive systems, architecture or digital engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or progress towards professional registration, is desirable.
  • Relevant systems engineering, architecture, cyber security, networking, cloud, data or project delivery certifications would be beneficial.
  • Candidates without a degree may be considered where they can demonstrate substantial relevant engineering experience and capability.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
