Position Summary

The Senior Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, selecting, and underwriting policies within a designated coverage area, ensuring alignment with the standards and objectives of established insurance programs.

Responsibilities

  • Serve in a lead capacity by managing workflows, providing direction, and assisting with staff training and development.
  • Evaluate new applications, endorsements and loss information to determine risk eligibility.
  • Apply underwriting guidelines, pricing models and company strategy to ensure profitable and sustainable risk selection.
  • Exercise sound judgment within delegated authority when making decisions regarding risk acceptance and pricing.
  • Assess and price risks based on exposure, loss history and prevailing market conditions.
  • Prepare and revise accurate, comprehensive quotes for agent consideration.
  • Identify and recommend pricing, or coverage adjustments, to enhance program competitiveness and profitability.
  • Review monthly renewals for potential pricing adjustments or non-renewal recommendations.
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with agents regarding renewals, coverage modifications and underwriting decisions.
  • Partner with Claims, Loss Control, Marketing and other departments to service accounts, address issues and support loss mitigation efforts.
  • Contribute to the refinement of underwriting guidelines, workflow improvements and system enhancements.
  • Support the adoption and optimization of underwriting technology tools to drive efficiency and performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance or related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Four or more years of multi-line property and casualty underwriting experience
  • Knowledge of the construction industry with specialized expertise in worker’s compensation
  • Ability to make sound underwriting decisions, manage complex accounts and maintain profitability
  • Skill in interpersonal interactions with the ability to collaborate across teams and build strong agent relationships
  • Skill in analysis, negotiation and problem solving
  • Skill in time management and prioritization with high attention to detail
  • Ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality and professional integrity
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and function specific software applications
