Senior EC&I Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Senior EC&I Engineer to join an exciting growing engineering consultancy who have secured a brand new office space, they are delivering technically challenging projects across the pharmaceutical, life sciences, food manufacturing, and research sectors.

With a strong pipeline of projects and increasing demand for in-house engineering expertise, this role offers the opportunity to take ownership of Electrical, Control & Instrumentation design activities from concept through to commissioning, working on everything from pilot-scale facilities to large commercial manufacturing plants.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys technical leadership, client engagement, and multidisciplinary project delivery within highly regulated environments.

The Role

As a Senior EC&I Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, and implementation of electrical, control, and instrumentation systems for process manufacturing facilities. You will work closely with project teams, clients, suppliers, and stakeholders, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead EC&I design activities from concept, FEED, and detailed design through to construction support.
  • Produce technical deliverables including:
    • Single line diagrams
    • Instrument schedules
    • Control philosophies
    • Cause & Effect matrices
    • I/O schedules
  • Develop EC&I solutions that meet project, client, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and develop Process and Utility P&IDs.
  • Prepare design calculations, specifications, and equipment data sheets.
  • Support Functional Safety system development in line with BS EN 61508 and BS EN 61511.
  • Undertake hazardous area assessments and develop ATEX-compliant designs.
  • Provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Coordinate internal resources, external design partners, and specialist suppliers.
  • Support procurement, construction, commissioning, and qualification activities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to developing engineering capability.
  • Support client relationships, proposals, and business development activities.

About You

We're looking for a motivated and technically capable engineer who can combine strong EC&I expertise with project leadership and stakeholder management skills.

Essential Requirements

  • 5+ years' EC&I design experience within pharmaceutical, life sciences, food manufacturing, or related process industries.
  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience delivering EC&I solutions within regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of Functional Safety principles and relevant standards (BS EN 61508 / BS EN 61511).
  • Experience of ATEX hazardous area design and BS EN 60079 requirements.
  • Excellent communication and client-facing skills.
  • Strong project coordination and technical leadership capabilities.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Right to work in the UK (sponsorship is not available).

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards.
  • Membership of IET, InstMC, IChemE, or a similar professional body.
  • TÜV Functional Safety qualification.
  • CompEx qualification.
  • Knowledge of cGMP regulations and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
