At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose to improve people’s lives.
About The Team
Bath and North East Somerset is a large and diverse district in the West of England, containing not only the internationally renowned City of Bath World Heritage Site, but also an extensive area of Green Belt, two AONBs, and beautiful countryside and settlements.
There is a rich and diverse natural environment with some important, designated sites including Chew Valley Lake Special Protection Area, and the Bath & Bradford on Avon Bats Special Area of Conservation, as well as many Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Local Nature Reserves and non-statutory Sites of Nature Conservation Interest and Regionally Important Geological Sites.
Bath & North East Somerset is also home to a unique and special array of rare and protected wildlife and habitats.
You will work within a small team of ecologists alongside a range of other specialists within the team, including landscape, tree, heritage, conservation and planning professionals.
About The Role
You will be providing specialist advice to planning officers on a day-to-day basis to ensure that ecological matters are taken fully into consideration in the planning process including delivering Biodiversity Net Gain.
You will be expected to demonstrate a high level of experience as an ecologist working within a planning environment and giving effective and reliable ecological advice. You will have a high degree of autonomy, independently managing your own workload. One day you might be looking at proposals in Bath city centre close to the river corridor, the next, plans to extend an agricultural business; another day, new housing which might impact a valuable, designated area.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
