Position: Senior Electrical Design Engineer

Job Type: Permanent
Salary: Competitive salary, dependent on experience
Ref: 970379

HSB Technical is working with an established engineering business based in Portsmouth that designs and delivers complex, high-value electrical systems for the marine sector. Due to continued growth and a strong project pipeline, the business is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join its engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity to take technical ownership of challenging electrical design projects, working from initial concept and requirements capture through detailed design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and final customer acceptance. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering, production, project and customer teams to deliver reliable and compliant solutions. This role would suit someone with either a Motorsport / Automotive or Aerospace background.

As Senior Electrical Design Engineer, you will:

  • Lead the electrical design of complex marine systems from concept through to production and commissioning.
  • Interpret customer requirements, technical specifications and statements of work, translating them into practical and compliant engineering solutions.
  • Produce and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, termination drawings, panel layouts, bills of materials and supporting technical documentation.
  • Complete electrical calculations, including cable sizing, load analysis, protection requirements, voltage drop and equipment selection.
  • Select appropriate electrical components and equipment, considering performance, reliability, availability, cost and whole-life support.
  • Support the integration of power distribution, control, automation, navigation, communications and auxiliary electrical systems as applicable to each project.
  • Undertake and contribute to design reviews, ensuring technical risks, interfaces and actions are identified and managed effectively.
  • Work closely with mechanical, software, systems, production and project engineering teams to ensure designs are fully integrated and suitable for manufacture and installation.
  • Provide technical support during build, installation, test and commissioning, investigating faults and resolving design or production issues efficiently.
  • Liaise with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders, representing the electrical engineering function in technical discussions and project meetings.
  • Ensure designs and documentation comply with relevant marine, electrical, safety, quality and regulatory standards.
  • Support continuous improvement by developing engineering processes, standardising documentation and sharing technical knowledge across the team.
  • Provide guidance, coaching and technical review support to junior engineers and designers where required.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
