Senior Electrical Engineer : Building Services

Location: Cardiff / Bristol

Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: GBP 45,000 - GBP 60,000 (dependent on experience)

Overview

An established building services consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join its growing team in either Cardiff or Bristol. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineer with at least five years experience in electrical building services design who is looking to lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and work closely with clients across a diverse range of innovative developments.

The successful candidate will have proven project leadership experience, strong technical knowledge of LV distribution, power systems, lighting design, fire alarms, and HV infrastructure, alongside proficiency with industry-standard design and BIM software. Membership with CIBSE or IET (or working towards it), together with progress towards Chartered Engineer status, would be highly advantageous.

Day-to-Day

Your Typical Day Will Involve

  • Collaborating with clients and project teams to develop tailored electrical engineering solutions.
  • Preparing detailed designs, calculations, and specifications for building services projects.
  • Leading project meetings and ensuring effective communication across all stakeholders.
  • Reviewing and approving technical documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Conducting site visits to monitor progress, resolve issues, and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Supporting the professional development of junior team members through mentoring and training.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will:

  • Lead electrical design activities across all RIBA stages, ensuring high-quality and innovative solutions.
  • Manage projects from inception to completion, coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a key point of contact for stakeholders.
  • Oversee quality assurance procedures and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering their professional growth.
  • Conduct site inspections, support commissioning activities, and perform technical reviews.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in electrical building services design.
  • Proven experience leading projects and managing engineering teams.
  • Membership with CIBSE or IET (or actively working towards membership).
  • Progress towards achieving Chartered Engineer status.
  • Strong technical expertise in:
    • LV distribution and switchgear
    • Cable calculations (e.g., Amtech / ElectricalOM)
    • Generator, transformer, and UPS systems
    • Lighting design (Dialux / Relux)
    • Fire alarm and life safety systems
    • HV infrastructure and private networks
    • CAD and BIM software
