Senior Electrical Engineer

Department: Midlands / Technical Management & Design Division

Location: Birmingham Office & Site Projects

Reports To: Director / Associate Director

Responsible For: Junior Engineers / Graduate Engineers / Contractors

Length of Contract: Permanent

Salary / Package: £45 - £60K per annum + Competitive Benefits

Working Hours / Base: Full Time | Birmingham Office & Site Visits

Main Purpose of the Role:

To work as a Senior Electrical Engineer within FHP Group’s Technical Management and Design Division based in Birmingham. The role requires applying broad technical knowledge, commercial awareness, and professional judgement to the design, coordination, audit, and delivery of electrical building services across a wide variety of sectors. The individual will conduct technical site audits and surveys (Due Diligence, Dilapidations, PPM, and Condition Surveys), author rigorous technical reports, and lead electrical design assignments from inception through tender, contract execution, and on-site commissioning supervision.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Technical Management & Building Audits: Manage and participate in site inspections and building services audits, producing detailed Technical Due Diligence, Dilapidations Schedules, Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), and Condition Survey reports.
  • Electrical Design & Engineering: Design complete electrical systems including power distribution, interior/exterior lighting, emergency systems, cable management, fire alarms, security, lightning protection, and renewable technologies.
  • Project & Financial Management: Design, manage, and supervise electrical projects; agree client briefs, technical scopes, cost plans, and deliverables; monitor CAD/engineering resource requirements, fee performance, and financial budgets.
  • Calculations & Software Proficiency: Perform complex electrical calculations (cable sizing, discrimination, lighting design, voltage drop) using Cymap, Amtech/Trimble, Office 365, and AutoCAD.
  • Site Supervision & Quality Assurance: Inspect on-site installations, audit workmanship, supervise electrical testing and commissioning, and ensure projects adhere strictly to design briefs, programmes, and quality standards.
  • Team Leadership & Staff Development: Act as Team Leader on multi-disciplinary projects, directing, mentoring, and reviewing the work of junior engineers, graduate trainees, and sub contractors.
  • Client & Stakeholder Relations: Maintain strong working relationships with clients and multi disciplinary design teams to ensure satisfaction, secure repeat business, and identify new business opportunities.
  • Compliance & H&S Systems: Ensure full compliance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), CDM Regulations, H&S policies, and company QA/Environmental systems (ISO 9001 & ISO 14001).

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • Preferably 5+ years’ post-graduate experience within an M&E engineering consultancy, contractor, or technical services team.
  • Proven experience in M&E technical management surveys (Due Diligence, Dilapidations, PPM, Condition Surveys) and report writing.

Technical Skills & Software:

  • In-depth knowledge of electrical building services engineering, BS 7671, statutory regulations, and M&E compliance.
  • High proficiency in Cymap, Microsoft Office 365, and working knowledge of AutoCAD (Amtech/Trimble and REVIT knowledge beneficial).
  • Ability to produce complete electrical designs, specifications, schedules of work, and formal technical survey reports.

Behavioural & Professional Competencies:

  • Strong written English skills essential for authoring Technical Management and Due Diligence reports.
  • Commercial acumen with the ability to manage project fee structures, monitor design variations, and control budgets.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with clients, contractors, and project teams.
  • Innovative problem-solver with a conscientious, self-motivated, and structured workload management approach.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to project sites across the UK (including remote locations where necessary).
