Own the product's quality and standards agenda — and grow into leading the team that delivers it.
You'll guide the product through EN 54 and the other accreditations it needs, building the kind of compliance experience that is genuinely hard to come by. This isn't just about writing code; it's about building credibility, creating the documentation, and making the product industry-proof.
You'll be part of a small, skilled team where you'll always have support, and where you're close enough to the founders that decisions happen in days rather than months. You'll flex across development, testing and manufacturing, broadening your expertise while staying focused on what makes you great.

Where this role can go
Right now this is a hands-on engineering role, and that's how it starts. But the team is small and growing, and there's a clear path here for someone with natural leadership instincts to take on more: keeping the team moving day to day, bringing on the less experienced engineers, and reporting into the founders directly.
You don't need to have led a team before. You do need to be the sort of person others naturally look to — and to want that as part of where your career goes next.
What you'll do
You'll work methodically against the standards, feeding insight back into the business. That includes:
- Assessing each standard, identifying where the product currently sits, and closing the gaps.
- Writing the code to fill those gaps — handling the edge cases and failure modes that standards demand.
- Generating the documentation each standard needs, including reverse-engineering or rebuilding design documentation to original-design-spec level where it doesn't yet exist.
- Raising the bar on overall product quality, and on the data and insight the product produces.
- Applying that to the manufacturing side too — manufacturing test and returns processing both sit inside the quality picture.
- Using your knowledge to tell the business how the product can serve clients better, not just pass tests.

What you'll need
- Embedded software engineering experience with genuine radio/wireless knowledge — how radio technology stacks together, how it behaves when it fails, and the edge cases that come with it.
- Proven experience developing to standards — comfortable taking a formal standard and driving a product through to compliance accreditation.
- Enough experience to hold your own and make sound design decisions, having come up through a range of engineering roles. In a company this size, when a technical problem lands, you're one of the people who has to solve it — there isn't a department to hand it to.
- The instinct to talk to people early. If something isn't working — technically, or in how the role is going — you pick up the phone and say so rather than letting it sit.
- Comfort with a smaller-company pace. Priorities move, and you won't always have visibility of what next month looks like. That's the trade for having real influence over what gets built.

You'll be a developer first, with testing and manufacturing knowledge as a bonus.
You might have come from a smaller team where you carried real responsibility, or from larger projects and be looking to move somewhere more hands-on. Either way, this suits someone who still wants to learn — from the founders, from the standards work, from a product they'll come to know better than anyone. It's a team of people who muck in together, not a collection of specialists working in parallel.
About the company
Howler is moving the product into a stronger, more self-sufficient phase and stepping back from its third-party development partner. The embedded core works, but it isn't "finished" in the sense that matters commercially: there's a significant body of standards, documentation and quality work still to do before the product carries the depth of credibility the fire-detection industry expects.
This person is the engineer who owns that agenda, with quality the expected outcome of getting it right. The headline target is EN 54, but that's one of several accreditation standards the product will need to meet over the next couple of years. The work is part code, part evidence, part judgement — and it's the guiding light that will shape the role for its first 18–24 months.
