About the Role
After an initial training and tailored onboarding programme, you will design, develop and maintain embedded software for our core product range. The role spans both New Product Development and support of released products, including defect investigation, feature enhancements and software improvements. You will join an international R&D team with a strong track record of delivering reliable, world-leading industrial products.
Our products are high-performance precision machines that print and label at speed onto moving targets. As part of our mechatronics development team, you may work across real-time motion control, embedded Linux, communications, signal processing, user interfaces, image recognition, security and industrial automation technologies.
What you will do:
- Design, develop, test and maintain embedded software for real-time and Linux-based product platforms, including low-level drivers, hardware interfaces and application software.
- Develop a strong understanding of our existing and future products, contributing to improvements in performance, reliability and maintainability.
- Contribute to New Product Development and maintenance of existing products, including defect fixes and feature additions.
- Work within an Agile development environment, contributing to planning, estimation, reviews and continuous improvement.
- Create clear technical documentation to support software design, testing, release and long-term product support.
- Take ownership of assigned work, applying attention to detail and good engineering judgement to deliver against agreed plans.

You do not need to have experience in every area listed below. We are looking for the right embedded software engineer, and there is flexibility to shape the role around your strengths, experience and interests.
Core skills and experience:
- Strong embedded software design and development experience, using C or C++ on real-time or embedded Linux platforms.
- Experience with real-time control using an RTOS such as FreeRTOS on Cortex-M microcontrollers.
- Experience across embedded Linux software layers, such as kernel configuration, device drivers, bootloaders and user-space applications.
- Experience with WinCE embedded systems.
- Familiarity with embedded build toolchains and build systems, for example GCC, Make, CMake or Buildroot.
- Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills, including experience diagnosing issues on target hardware using tools such as Trace32 or GDB.
- Practical experience with development tools and engineering workflows, including Visual Studio, Eclipse, Git, GitHub, Jira or similar tools.
- Openness to using AI-assisted development tools, such as Copilot and Claude, to support coding, debugging, documentation and test development.
- Good communication skills, patience and the ability to collaborate constructively with colleagues across software, electronics, mechanical and product teams.
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Additionally useful skills:
- FPGA skills including experience with VHDL, ModelSim/Questa or Xilinx tools and devices.
- C# or Python experience for developing reusable test applications, diagnostics or engineering tools.
- Experience with industrial communications protocols such as Ethernet/IP and PROFINET.
- Experience with industrial sensors, actuators or motion control, especially stepper motors.
- Comfortable with reading electronic circuit schematics and complex data sheets.
