Location: Bristol / Portishead area
Working Pattern: Hybrid - 3 days onsite / 2 days remote
Stockford Recruitment is working exclusively with an established and growing engineering technology business to recruit a Senior Embedded Software Engineer. The company designs and develops complex engineering products used in demanding, mission-critical environments around the world. With continued investment in its technology and product development capability, this is an opportunity to join a highly skilled, multidisciplinary engineering team working on products where software reliability and quality genuinely matter.
The Role
As Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you'll take a leading technical role across the architecture, design, development, testing and continuous improvement of embedded software. This remains a highly hands-on engineering position, but with greater ownership and influence than a typical development role. You'll help shape embedded software architectures, solve complex technical challenges and take software through the full lifecycle from initial concept to commercial delivery. You'll also act as a senior technical presence within the team, supporting less experienced engineers and helping drive strong software engineering practices.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain embedded software using C and C++
- Develop software for ARM-based processors and STM32 microcontrollers
- Define and contribute to embedded software architectures for new and existing products
- Develop reliable embedded applications for complex engineering environments
- Work closely with hardware and microcontroller peripherals including USB, I2C, SPI, UART, DMA, ADC and DAC
- Develop firmware for communication interfaces including Ethernet, RS485, RS232 and CAN
- Debug, test, validate and continuously improve embedded software
- Evaluate new software technologies and their potential application within products
- Produce high-quality technical documentation
- Coordinate and plan technical development activities
- Take ownership of technical problems through to resolution
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers
- Work closely with engineers from other disciplines throughout the product development lifecycle
- Help promote engineering best practice and continuous improvement across the team

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Skills Required
We're looking for an experienced Embedded Software or Firmware Engineer with strong commercial experience developing software for physical engineering products. You'll ideally have:
- Strong hands-on development experience with C and C++
- Commercial embedded software or firmware development experience
- Experience with ARM-based processors, STM32 or comparable microcontroller platforms
- Strong understanding of embedded software architecture and development practices
- Experience working close to hardware and with common microcontroller peripherals
- Knowledge of interfaces and protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, RS485 or RS232
- Strong debugging, testing and problem-solving skills
- Experience developing reliable embedded systems
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams
- The ability to take technical ownership rather than simply work from predefined requirements
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
- An interest in mentoring and supporting other engineers
- A degree in Software Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline would be beneficial, although equivalent commercial experience will also be considered.
