Job Purpose

To play a key role in the profitable development and management of the Marine & Energy Liability (MEL) portfolio, with a particular focus on Energy Liability.

The Senior Underwriter will underwrite and develop new and existing business, contribute to portfolio strategy and Business Plan delivery, and build strong relationships with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders. The role requires strong technical underwriting judgement, commercial awareness and the ability to identify and develop profitable opportunities across the Energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal MEL business through Lloyd’s and the Company, within agreed authority, underwriting guidelines and the Business Plan.
  • Take a leading role in underwriting and developing Energy Liability business, including Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, Power, Renewables, Drilling & Services Contractors and Onshore/Offshore Construction.
  • Assess and price complex risks, including exposures, loss experience, contractual arrangements, policy coverage and appropriate terms and conditions.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the MEL underwriting strategy and Business Plan, with a focus on sustainable profitability and portfolio balance.
  • Undertake account and portfolio performance analysis, identifying trends, emerging exposures and areas requiring underwriting action.
  • Proactively develop new and existing broker relationships and identify profitable new business opportunities.
  • Represent and promote the business with brokers, clients and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Present risks at Peer Review and contribute to technical underwriting discussions across the division.
  • Work collaboratively with Claims, Actuarial, Exposure Management and other functions to support effective underwriting and portfolio management.
  • Support the training, mentoring and development of junior members of the team.
  • Maintain high underwriting and file-management standards and ensure compliance with applicable legal, regulatory and governance requirements.
  • Remain current with market, legal and industry developments affecting Marine & Energy Liability, particularly developments across the Energy sector.

Essential Skills and Experience Specification:

  • Ideally five years’+ relevant Energy Liability underwriting experience with a strong understanding of the Lloyd’s and international (re)insurance markets.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Energy Liability, including relevant exposures, pricing methodologies, contractual considerations and policy coverages.
  • Broad understanding of Energy segments including Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, Power, Renewables, Drilling & Services Contractors and Onshore/Offshore Construction.
  • Knowledge of both North American and International business and relevant market networks.
  • Strong broker relationships with the ability to develop and originate new business.
  • Sound commercial judgement, negotiation and underwriting decision-making skills.
  • Good understanding of legal and contractual concepts relevant to liability underwriting.
  • Experience with electronic trading platforms including PPL and/or Whitespace.
  • Degree educated or equivalent experience.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and account performance analysis skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong relationship-building and negotiation capabilities.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to mentor and develop junior colleagues.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; Power BI experience advantageous.

Desirable

  • Fluency in additional languages advantageous.
  • Experience of Marine Liability underwriting would be desirable to provide cover to the wider team when required.
  • ACII qualified, working towards ACII or equivalent qualification advantageous but not essential.
