About The Role

Ecotricity, the UK’s first true green energy provider, has a strong internal technology team building solutions across mission-critical platforms.

The Senior Engineer will create solutions that use artificial intelligence to solve real business problems, with AWS/Databricks as the core production platform and Claude and Codex supporting the engineering workflow.

This is a hands-on role spanning discovery, software delivery and the reliable operation of live services.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design, build, deployment and ongoing operation of production-grade AI-enabled data products on AWS and Databricks.
  • Work with stakeholders to define the user problem, measurable outcomes, data requirements and a pragmatic technical approach.
  • Prototype rapidly with Claude, Codex and other approved AI tooling, then turn successful concepts into secure, maintainable software.
  • Build reliable data pipelines, APIs and back-end services, together with front-end web or app experiences where the product requires them.
  • Apply strong software engineering practices including code review, automated testing, CI/CD, version control, documentation and infrastructure as code.
  • Create evaluation, monitoring and observability for data quality, model or LLM behaviour, service reliability, performance and cost.
  • Protect sensitive data and apply appropriate security, privacy, governance and responsible AI controls throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Operate and support live services, resolve faults swiftly, reduce technical debt and share practical knowledge with the wider team.

About the Team

The Ecotricity Technology department is a small friendly team with a strong focus on getting results, with everyone committed to delivering both individually and as part of the group/project. We have a training programme in place to further advance your skills, with dedicated learning time planned into our workloads.

Relevant training and certifications, including Databricks and AWS, are supported by the company, alongside opportunities to deepen applied AI and software engineering skills.

We’re proud to be an ethical company, and this naturally attracts ethical people, making for a good safe working environment and a team that works and wins together. We also have a competitive benefits package and chose to invest in our people whenever we can.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About You

Are you an experienced engineer who enjoys turning business problems and data into useful, production-ready products? We are looking for a practical Senior Engineer who can take ownership from early discovery and prototyping through to deployment, adoption and support.

You will design and build end-to-end AI-enabled solutions on AWS and Databricks. Depending on the problem, this may be pipelines, APIs, backend services and user-facing websites or applications. We value sound engineering judgement over using AI for its own sake.

You will select the simplest effective approach, prove value quickly, and then engineer for security, performance, cost, maintainability and scale. Experience in the energy industry is helpful but not essential.

You will work closely with product owners, project managers, subject-matter experts, data teams and other stakeholders. You will explain options clearly, demonstrate working software, gather feedback and translate it into measurable product outcomes.

This is a hybrid role, you will be self-motivated, delivery-focused and comfortable driving work independently. You will also contribute to shared engineering standards, review the work of peers and actively develop your own skills as AI tooling evolves.

If you want to build responsible AI products that move beyond prototypes and deliver tangible value in a dynamic, purpose-led organisation, we encourage you to apply.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Experience building and operating production software, data products or applied AI systems.
  • Strong Python, including experience designing APIs and integrating external services.
  • Practical experience with Databricks
  • Experience deploying secure, scalable workloads on AWS.
  • Understanding of applied AI and LLM patterns such as retrieval-augmented generation, tool use, structured extraction and evaluation.
  • Effective use of AI coding assistants such as Claude and Codex, with the judgement to review, test and own the resulting code.
  • Strong software delivery practices using GitHub or Bitbucket, automated testing and CI/CD.
  • Ability to build usable front-end web or app experiences using TypeScript, React or a comparable framework.
  • Clear communication, product thinking and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Flexibility Statement

The fast moving nature of the business means that from time to time you may be asked to perform duties or tasks outside of your original job description on an ad hoc basis. This allows the company to utilise our people in the best possible way at all times and helps our colleagues to make the best contribution in a changing environment.

Ecotricity is Britain's overall greenest energy company- it’s more than just green energy – the breadth and depth of our work on green issues is unmatched. When we started back in 1995, we were the first company in the world to provide a new kind of electricity - the green kind. Our mission was, and remains, to change the way energy is made and used in Britain - by replacing fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy.

We don't just supply green energy, we use the money from our customers' bills to make it ourselves too – we have built windmills and sun parks in Britain. We call this turning 'bills into mills'.

We don't just focus on energy though- we built the Electric Highway, Britain's leading network of electric vehicle charging points; we helped Forest Green Rovers become the greenest football club in the world; and we launched Britain's greenest mobile phone service, Ecotalk, where they use the money from their customers' bills to protect and regenerate Britain's lost rainforests.

Ecotricity is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to providing equality for all.
