Senior Engineer
Network Rail Embankment Stabilisation Project | Sonning, Reading
Are you an experienced Senior Engineer looking to play a key role on a major infrastructure project within a live railway environment?
Taylor Woodrow is seeking a Senior Engineer to join the team delivering a significant £40m embankment stabilisation scheme for Network Rail on the Great Western Main Line in Sonning, Reading.
This complex and technically challenging project is scheduled to run for approximately 3 to 4 years, providing excellent long-term career stability and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on one of the UK's critical transport networks.
Scope of Works
- Embankment stabilisation within a live rail environment
- Soil nailing operations
- Drainage installation and improvement works
- Site establishment and de-vegetation activities
- Associated civil engineering and earthworks packages
About the Role
As Senior Engineer, you will take responsibility for the engineering management of a section of the project, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme, and to the highest quality standards. You will work closely with site management teams, subcontractors, designers, and Network Rail stakeholders, while providing leadership to site engineering teams.

The role requires sound technical judgement, strong problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to understand the wider safety, programme, quality, and commercial implications of engineering decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering activities on allocated sections of work.
- Develop and implement construction methodologies.
- Manage engineering teams and coordinate site activities.
- Ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with project requirements.
- Review and manage risk assessments and method statements.
- Liaise with designers, consultants, subcontractors, and client representatives.
- Resolve engineering and logistical challenges on site.
- Monitor programme performance and critical path activities.
- Maintain accurate site records, reports, and documentation.
- Support cost control and provide input into estimates and commercial reporting.
- Drive continuous improvement and innovative engineering solutions.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will likely have:
- A degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering.
- Previous experience as a Senior Engineer or an experienced Site Engineer on major infrastructure projects.
- Experience within rail, earthworks, embankment stabilisation, geotechnical, highways, or heavy civil engineering projects.
- A strong understanding of construction methodologies and engineering principles.
- Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of health, safety, environmental, and quality standards on major projects.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership of engineering delivery.
