Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Overview of role

The core function of this role is maintaining TfL’s fire performance standards whilst providing technical support and specialist materials advice across Transport for London to key project delivery teams and stakeholders to ensure compliance with standards, safety requirements and current legislation.

This role includes providing guidance on fire performance and product selection to TfL’s Rolling Stock and Signals teams and ideally the candidate will have experience in one or both of these areas.

Key Accountabilities

  • As part of a project team provide engineering support ensuring that technical standards are being applied through critical examination of contractor’s design submissions throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure contractors compliance with applicable standards, specifications and procedures
  • Undertake detailed review of project quality plans and develop documentation for presentation to the Principal Project Engineer / Lead Project Engineer and recommend the acceptance of assets on to the TfL network.
  • Advise on method statements, interpretation of engineering standards and suggest improvements to the contractor, where safety, reliability and risk issues are identified.
  • Critically review and report on documents and activities such as work specifications, working instructions, operational safety plans, project engineering designs and commissioning plans and propose improvement where this is appropriate.
  • Provide technical advice to project teams within area of expertise.
  • Contribute to successful system integration through involvement of relevant disciplines and parties.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Skills

  • Ability to analyse complex data, draw conclusions, produce reports and make recommendations to senior management. Essential

Knowledge

  • A Degree and/or Higher National qualifications in Material Science, Chemistry or similar. Essential
  • In depth knowledge / experience in the application of TfL standards particularly S1085. Desirable
  • Intermediate knowledge of maintenance techniques and good industry practice. Desirable
  • Knowledge of materials, in particular non-metallic materials. Essential
  • Knowledge of safety legislation and operating rules and regulations. Desirable
  • Knowledge and capability to undertake quality inspections and site investigations. Desirable
  • Knowledge of LUL business, its obligations and priorities. Essential
  • Knowledge of risk management principles. Desirable
  • Knowledge of rail signalling. Desirable
  • Knowledge of Rolling Stock (preferably LUL. Desirable

Experience

  • Significant experience in Materials compliance in the rail environment. Desirable
  • Wide experience of providing professional and technical advice, guidance and support on project engineering issues. Essential
  • Experience of carrying out technical document review and analysis. Essential
  • Experience of building relationships with, and influencing, a range of people at all levels both internal and external. Desirable
  • Experience of working in a construction or engineering environment. Desirable.
  • Experience in underground railways. Desirable
