Job Title: Senior Engineer - Mechanical Engineering (Secondary Propulsion)
Location: Barrow – Hybrid (2 days every 2 weeks)

Salary: £42,215+ (Commensurate with skills and experience)

Role Description
The SSNA Engineering team are looking for a strong technical and problem-solving, Senior Engineer - Mechanical Engineering (Secondary Propulsion) to join the team. In this role you will lead the development and maturation of complex propulsion equipment, manage system interfaces, and provide technical leadership within a highly collaborative design-focused team.
This is an exciting opportunity that will allow you to work alongside specialist suppliers to develop bespoke engineering solutions and to be involved in the end-to-end product development from concept through qualification and delivery.
Core Duties
- Lead development of mechanical propulsion equipment through the design and product maturation lifecycle
- Own technical requirements and drive design solutions that meet functional, safety, quality and programme needs
- Manage interfaces across equipment, systems, suppliers and wider platform transversals
- Review technical deliverables including calculations, CAD models, technical specifications and design reports
- Resolve complex engineering issues and support technical decision-making
- Mentor junior engineers and support development of engineering capability within the team
- Maintain awareness of verification, validation, manufacturing and installation considerations to ensure designs are practical, buildable and supportable

Essential Skills
- BEng (Hons) Degree or equivalent experience in the appropriate discipline for the role
- Understanding of mechanical design, thermodynamics, fluid systems, rotor dynamics, machine design, materials and engineering analysis
- Ability to understand complex interfaces, manage competing requirements and make sound engineering decisions. Demonstrable through their prior experience
- Ability to lead technical activities, engage stakeholders confidently and drive issues through to resolution
- Knowledge or at least recognition of relevant engineering standards (including safety and environmental regulations)
The SSNA Mechanical Engineering Team
As a Senior Engineer - Mechanical Engineering (Secondary Propulsion), you will be joining a multi-disciplinary team, working with suppliers and stakeholders. Our engineers are given significant ownership and influence over product development, and have strong focus on collaboration, knowledge sharing, mentoring and professional development. The team is involved in the Design and development of propulsion equipment for the SSNA programme, mechanical system integration within a highly regulated environment and advanced engineering analysis and design substantiation.
Should you wish to relocate closer to the nuclear site at Barrow, we offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
