Building a sustainable tomorrow

BAM UK & Ireland's Infrastructure segment are seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Environmental Sustainability Advisor with a strong background in carbon management to coordinate the delivery of carbon management deliverables in our Transport Sector business.

Reporting to the Sector Carbon Manager and project Environmental leads, you will be responsible for carbon management activities for a range of UK transport infrastructure projects, including a large high speed rail project located in southern England. This role will lead on stakeholder engagement to compile whole life carbon impact assessments, identify and champion carbon reduction opportunities, and deliver carbon management in alignment with PAS2080:2023.

This position presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of critical infrastructure projects, driving substantial reductions in carbon through innovative and strategic approaches.

Your Team

You will be partially based out of a project office either in London or Birmingham minimum 3 days office / site each week

Making Possible

You will lead on carbon management activities across a range of projects, acting as the primary liaison for managing supply chain partners in carbon reduction efforts and ensuring alignment between project goals and BAM’s sustainability strategy.

Key Responsibilities Will Include

Opportunity identification and management

  • Plan, coordinate, and chair regular carbon meetings to discuss implementation progress
  • Develop and maintain a broad and comprehensive understanding of opportunities for carbon reduction
  • Work collaboratively with the wider supply chain team to identify and implement whole life carbon reduction opportunities, including client, contracting partners, designers, subcontractors and suppliers
  • Contribute to, and be prepared to lead, on the development and testing of innovative carbon reduction technologies and methods

Carbon data

  • Compile whole life carbon emissions data and prepare reports for submission using client tools
  • Provide analytical support to quantify potential carbon savings as they are identified throughout project development

Reporting & deliverables

  • Fully understand client’s carbon requirements, contract conditions, and their implications to ensure processes are in place to meet those requirements
  • Develop and periodically update and issue the Carbon Management Plan (CMP) and life cycle impact assessment reports
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to keep documentation up to date
  • Report on project advancements, carbon reduction opportunities, and actions required to wider stakeholders as required

Continuous improvement

  • Champion the development and testing of carbon reduction innovation opportunities
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by tracking and sharing best practices
  • Contribute lessons learnt to the wider BAM UK&I business through sharing of case studies and other knowledge transfer activities
  • Deliver carbon-related training and presentations to colleagues and external stakeholders

What do you bring to the role?

Required

  • Strong background in sustainability, embodied carbon assessment, or environmental management in infrastructure or construction projects.
  • Understanding of carbon management principles and PAS2080
  • Understanding of industry best practices, opportunities and methods for reducing carbon emissions from infrastructure construction
  • Familiarity with carbon accounting principles, life cycle assessment (LCA), and relevant software tools, eg etool
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams, including design, construction, and client teams.
  • Strong project management, collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting, with attention to detail.

Desirable

  • Experience in large-scale infrastructure design and/or construction.
  • Understanding of government policies and regulations related to carbon reduction

Desirable Qualifications

  • Degree in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or a related field.
  • Practitioner status or working towards a relevant professional accreditation (e.g., ISEP (formerly IEMA), ICE, CIBSE).
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a sustainability role, including whole life carbon assessment, ideally in the construction industry and infrastructure
