The Role: Senior Estimator

Our Infrastructure team is experiencing rapid growth, and we are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator in Belfast to join our team in shaping impactful projects.

As a Senior Estimator, you will:

  • Act as a key authority in preparing detailed cost estimates, risk evaluations, and opportunity assessments.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and reliable project cost management through stakeholder communication and data validation.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, supervise cost estimate preparation, train junior estimators, and support reporting cycles for estimate revisions.
  • Coordinate with project management and engineering teams to refine estimate development processes.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cost estimates at an appropriate detail level based on design documentation.
  • Analyse project documents, drawings, and plans to identify cost-influencing factors (e.g., logistics, materials, labour).
  • Conduct continuous risk and opportunity assessments to ensure projects stay within budget.
  • Present estimating findings and deliverables to senior management, contractors, and vendors via thermal reports and presentations.
  • Gather and verify up-to-date pricing information from databases, contractors, and suppliers to support strong estimation accuracy.
  • Review and finalise estimates based on market and project-specific conditions.
  • Analyse historical benchmark data to identify cost variance trends.
  • Collaborate with MetroLink to clarify project scope and ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior/intermediate estimators to enhance their skills.
  • Support the estimate changes reporting cycle, ensuring clear, actionable documentation.
  • Prepare, review, and validate material take-offs from plans and drawings.
  • Review contract documents to understand scope-of-work limitations and cost allowances for changes.
  • Perform any additional tasks or duties as assigned to fulfil project needs.
  • Adhere to SOX control responsibilities, where applicable.

Requirements

Experience (Essential)

  • 10+ years in cost management or estimation roles.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in cost estimating for active civil, rail/transit, airport, or commercial construction projects.
  • Exposure to contracting methods, including:
    • Design/Bid/Build (DbB)
    • Design-Build (DB)
    • Construction Management At Risk (CMAR)
    • Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP)
  • Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Candy, CostX).
  • Tangible experience implementing cost estimation frameworks within a PMO structure.
  • Preference for candidates with experience in large-scale civil engineering projects (particularly rail, water, or aviation sectors). Optimisation candidates with experience in other civil engineering infrastructure will also be considered.
  • Working knowledge of the NEC form of Contract.

Skills (Competencies & Attributes)

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong teamwork and collaborative mindset to work seamlessly with multidiscipline teams.
  • Ability to identify issues and develop effective solutions to maintain ** timelines and estimating accuracy**.
  • Technical competency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and Windows OS.
  • In-depth understanding of project estimating principles and industry-specific technicalities.
  • Negotiation skills for engaging with vendors and contractors.
  • Proficiency in project management and estimating software for data handling.
  • Skilled in supervising, coaching, and mentoring junior/intermediate estimators.
  • Precision in cost analysis and risk evaluation.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Level 8 degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field—such as Engineering, Construction, or Quantity Surveying—recommended but not mandatory.
  • Membership of a professional body (e.g., AACE International, ACoste, PMI, APM, SCSI/RICS, IEx) is an advantage but not required.
