As a Senior Estimator, you will play a key role in securing profitable civil engineering projects by leading the tendering process from initial enquiry through to submission and handover. Working closely with operational, commercial and pre-construction teams, you will develop winning bid strategies, provide commercial leadership and support the continued growth and success of the business.
Principal Accountability
- Lead the estimating function on civil engineering tenders from enquiry through to contract award and handover.
- Support the Head of Pre-Construction in delivering business objectives, strategic initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
- Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to estimating team members, ensuring resources are effectively allocated and developed and that the relevant HR activities are completed.
- Promote the highest standards of health, safety, compliance, sustainability and inclusion across all pre-construction activities in line with Company procedures and processes.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, supply chain partners and internal stakeholders.

Detailed Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation, pricing and submission of competitive civil engineering tenders.
- Develop tender strategies in collaboration with operational and pre-construction teams.
- Review tender documentation, identify risks and opportunities, and prepare clarifications where required.
- Attend and contribute to bid meetings, tender reviews, negotiations and client presentations.
- Produce Bills of Quantities and undertake quantity take-offs using Causeway or equivalent estimating software.
- Obtain and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations to secure best-value solutions.
- Work closely with planners to develop robust programmes and buildable construction methodologies.
- Maintain awareness of market trends, current rates, industry innovations and best practice.
- Lead tender handovers to operational teams and capture lessons learned to support continuous improvement.
Required Experience, Knowledge, Qualifications, And Training
- Proven experience in a Senior Estimator or Estimator role within the civil engineering sector.
- Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction, Quantity Surveying or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of civil engineering estimating principles and tendering processes.
- Experience preparing estimates from first principles and producing Bills of Quantities.
- Proficiency in Causeway Estimating software or a comparable estimating package.
- Knowledge of project risk management and CDM regulations.
- Strong commercial awareness, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent communication, organisational and IT skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- CSCS card appropriate to the role (desirable)
- Membership of a relevant professional institution or working towards professional membership.
- Experience managing complex, high-value infrastructure or civil engineering tenders.
- Previous experience leading, coaching or mentoring estimating teams.
- Advanced estimating, take-off and cost planning capabilities.
