MAC Groundworks is looking to recruit an experienced Senior Estimator to join our established estimating team.
This is a key commercial role for an experienced estimator with a strong background in civil engineering and groundworks. We are looking for someone who understands the sector, can confidently assess complex tender opportunities and has a proven track record of producing accurate and commercially competitive tenders for significant groundworks and civils projects.
The Role
Working closely with the Directors and wider commercial and operational teams, you will take responsibility for preparing detailed and accurate estimates from initial tender enquiry through to submission and subsequent handover.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing all aspects of estimating and tendering for groundworks and civil engineering projects.
- Reviewing tender enquiries, drawings, specifications and contract documentation.
- Preparing detailed cost plans and estimates, identifying true nett costs and appropriate allowances.
- Carrying out detailed quantity take-offs for labour, plant and materials.
- Obtaining and evaluating supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Identifying commercial risks, opportunities and potential cost efficiencies.
- Clearly defining scope, specifications, exclusions and allowances within tender submissions.
- Preparing tender documentation, budgets and project-specific commercial information.
- Liaising with clients, architects, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors throughout the tender process.
- Attending pre-contract and tender meetings where required.
- Ensuring high-quality tender submissions are completed accurately and within required deadlines.
- Supporting the identification and pursuit of new tender opportunities.
- Providing an effective commercial handover of successful tenders to the Contracts team.

About You
For this position, previous experience within the civil engineering and groundworks sector is essential.
You will need to demonstrate:
- A minimum of 5 years' estimating experience within civil engineering and/or groundworks.
- Extensive knowledge and practical experience of tendering for civils and groundworks projects with individual contract values exceeding £500,000.
- Strong knowledge of groundworks construction methods, materials, labour, plant and subcontract costs.
- The ability to interpret drawings, specifications, schedules and tender documentation.
- Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of project risk and profitability.
- Excellent numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills.
- The ability to manage multiple tenders and work effectively to demanding deadlines.
- Excellent attention to detail and a thorough, methodical approach.
- Strong IT skills and experience of relevant estimating systems/software.
- A proactive, self-motivated approach and strong work ethic.

A relevant construction, civil engineering or quantity surveying qualification would be advantageous, although substantial relevant industry experience is equally important.
