Job Description
As a Senior Facilities Engineer, you will join our Hertfordshire team to support our activities within the pharmaceutical manufacturing and research sector.
You will play a key role in ensuring the reliable, compliant, and efficient operation of site-wide building services, utilities, and critical infrastructure across a complex pharmaceutical manufacturing, research, and commercial facility. Reporting to the Engineering Manager and supporting day-to-day operations, you will lead engineering activities, supervise contractors and engineers, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to maintain the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities
- Support the supervision and coordination of engineering teams and specialist contractors delivering planned, reactive, and corrective maintenance activities
- Act as a primary technical contact for HVAC systems and business-critical building infrastructure
- Conduct equipment inspections and audits, identifying improvement opportunities and implementing corrective actions
- Review BMS and HVAC control systems to optimise plant performance and identify energy-saving opportunities
- Monitor equipment reliability and maintenance performance to ensure compliance with maintenance schedules and regulatory requirements
- Act as an Approved Person (Electrical HV/LV and/or Mechanical Pressure Systems) where authorised
- Support fault-finding, root cause investigations, and issue resolution activities
- Manage and supervise small works and engineering projects across the facility
- Coordinate maintenance shutdowns, equipment upgrades, and installation activities with key business stakeholders
- Review and approve maintenance procedures, work permits, and engineering documentation
- Support the development and delivery of training for engineering personnel
- Manage contractors and vendors, ensuring compliance with site policies, safety standards, and GMP requirements
- Prepare reports and presentations detailing equipment performance, maintenance activities, incidents, and resource utilisation
- Ensure all engineering records and documentation comply with statutory, Health & Safety, and GxP requirements
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across engineering operations
- Assess and recommend critical spare parts requirements to support asset reliability
- Participate in the site on-call rota (approximately 1 week in 6)

Qualifications
Required Skills
- Proven experience leading or supervising engineering teams in a maintenance environment
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical building services and utilities
- Experience working with HVAC systems and critical infrastructure
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and engineering documentation
- Experience updating and reviewing risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Knowledge of contractor management and maintenance governance processes
- Experience using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organisational, communication, and stakeholder management abilities
- Flexible approach with the ability to support occasional out-of-hours activities
Required Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
- Experience within a pharmaceutical, GMP-regulated, life sciences, healthcare, or similarly regulated environment
- Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership position
Desirable Skills
- Approved Person authorisation (Electrical HV/LV and/or Mechanical Pressure Systems)
- Experience working within pharmaceutical manufacturing or research facilities
- Knowledge of GxP, GMP, and regulatory compliance requirements
- Experience managing engineering projects and facility upgrades
- Understanding of energy management and sustainability initiatives
- Experience developing engineering maintenance strategies and asset reliability programme
