Senior Fellow (ST8 equiv) - Revision Arthroplasty Surgery
Applications are invited for a Senior Fellow (ST8 equiv) with a special interest in Revision Arthroplasty Surgery. The post will run for one year from 1st October 2026, although the start date could be negotiated. The post will involve duties mainly at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
About the Role
Norwich has a long tradition in arthroplasty surgery, dating back to Ken McKee. In more recent times it has provided Presidents of both the British Hip Society and BASK.
This post is being funded by money provided when Norwich became the regional Knee Revision Centre and company sponsorship from Smith and Nephew. The successful candidate would work predominantly with the revision knee surgeons, however would be encouraged to gain experience in revision hip surgery and trauma in this busy unit. A major component of this job will be supporting and developing the regional service and running the monthly knee MDT. Additionally, there will be the opportunity to undertake navigated arthroplasty using the CORI navigation system.
Norwich is a busy trauma centre, catering for a population of approximately 650,000 but even larger for open and complex fractures, spinal & pelvic trauma.
Responsibilities
- Elective Commitment: Knee surgery in general, with increased exposure to revision knee surgery, including periprosthetic fractures.
- Operating: Anticipated to be already capable of performing primary joint replacements with minimal supervision, and gradually increase operative responsibility in revision surgery over a period of one year. Sharing some operating lists with more junior orthopaedic trainees & sensitivity towards their training needs & indeed participation in their training will be expected.
- Outpatient Commitment: To new & follow up joint replacement clinics. List & follow up clinic commitments will be coordinated with the ST from each firm. New patient clinics are organized by the fellow to run in parallel with consultant clinics.
- Monthly Knee Arthroplasty MDT: The fellow is expected to organize, run & document the monthly knee arthroplasty MDT alongside the Clinical Specialist role. All upcoming revisions are discussed to facilitate planning. There is input from the microbiology team, so the fellow would be expected to be actively involved in all ongoing infection cases. The fellow is jointly responsible for maintaining the revision knee data base. The knee surgeons are aiming to run their MDT through the BAJIR database, so some experience with this would be desirable.
