Six-Month Post-FRCS Knee Arthroplasty Fellowship

This six-month post-FRCS Knee Arthroplasty Fellowship at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious orthopaedic surgeon to develop advanced arthroplasty expertise within one of the UK’s highest-volume joint replacement centres. Starting in February 2027, the fellowship offers extensive exposure to primary and revision knee arthroplasty in a department recognised for clinical excellence, innovation, and strong multidisciplinary working.

The post is primarily focused on elective and acute knee arthroplasty, with opportunities to gain additional experience in hip arthroplasty where appropriate.

Training covers the full range of contemporary knee arthroplasty procedures, including unicompartmental knee replacement, total knee replacement, robotic-assisted surgery using the Zimmer ROSA platform, and complex revision surgery. Working closely with Mr Nick Kalson and Mr Nickil Agni, the fellow will progressively develop clinical and operative independence, with opportunities to undertake independent operating lists when competence has been demonstrated.

The department has a national reputation for arthroplasty, day-case joint replacement, and bone and joint infection management. The fellowship is ideally suited to surgeons seeking high-volume operative experience, leadership development, and preparation for independent consultant practice.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The postholder will undertake a structured programme comprising weekly outpatient clinics, operating theatre sessions and dedicated time for administration, audit, research and quality improvement. The fellow will independently manage an average of one new osteoarthritis clinic per week, undertaking patient assessment, investigation review, treatment planning and surgical preparation.

Working alongside specialist arthroplasty consultants and the multidisciplinary team, the fellow will progressively develop clinical and operative independence, with the potential to undertake independent operating lists once competence has been demonstrated. There is also an opportunity to participate in the middle-grade on-call rota.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the fellow will contribute to audit, teaching and research programmes and will be supported to lead a clinical improvement project. The post offers excellent preparation for future independent consultant practice through exposure to high case volumes, innovation, leadership development and complex arthroplasty care.
