Lead Engineer - ABB Distributed Control Systems (DCS)

Your Role And Responsibilities

In this role, you'll help customers maximise the performance and reliability of their control systems by delivering expert field service and technical guidance.

  • Deliver expert field service support for ABB DCS systems, including preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, system modifications, commissioning and lifecycle services.
  • Act as the senior technical escalation point, leading complex fault finding, root-cause analysis, recovery activities and technical risk assessments.
  • Provide advanced on-site, remote and out-of-hours technical support while ensuring safe, high-quality service delivery.
  • Manage customer service activities and maintenance contract obligations, building trusted relationships and providing clear technical guidance and recommendations.
  • Conduct lifecycle audits, feasibility studies and technical assessments, identifying improvement opportunities and supporting system evolution.
  • Prepare accurate technical reports, service documentation, quotations support and recommendations, while identifying opportunities for additional service and lifecycle solutions.
  • Coach and mentor engineers, deliver technical training, and share best practices, troubleshooting methods and lessons learned across the service organisation.
  • Operate in accordance with ABB's Code of Conduct and all health, safety and environmental requirements, including participation in the on-call rota and travel throughout the UK and occasionally overseas.

Work model: home-office based with extensive travel through mainland UK and occasional overseas.

Qualifications For The Role

  • Degree-qualified in Engineering (BSc) or able to demonstrate equivalent engineering competence.
  • Extensive experience in process control engineering, including customer-site support, maintenance, commissioning, fault finding and complex technical troubleshooting.
  • Proven ability to work independently while supporting and developing others.
  • Expert working knowledge of at least one Distributed Control System (DCS), with the ability to broaden expertise through training and practical application.
  • Strong understanding of process control principles and industries reliant on industrial automation systems.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills, including complex diagnostics, technical reviews and risk-based decision making.
  • Commercially aware, with experience supporting customer relationships, contractual commitments and technically robust service proposals.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable and collaborative, with strong communication skills and excellent written and spoken English.
