Senior Finance Consultant
Balance Technologies - London
About us
Balance is a YC-backed startup building AI agents that take the grind out of bookkeeping - so finance people can focus on the work that actually matters. We've just closed a $4.5M Seed round led by Google Ventures, and we're a team of 6 growing fast.
The role
You'll be the primary finance contact for some of the UK's most exciting startups. Not buried in manual data entry - our AI agents handle most of that. Your job is to check the output from our agents, own the financial operations stack, and be the human our clients actually want to talk to. Think: part controller, part customer success manager, part trusted advisor.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What you'll actually do
- Review and validate the output of our bookkeeping agents (you're the quality bar)
- Own the month-end close for a portfolio of clients
- Handle the financial ops tasks AI can't do yet - VAT, reporting, the weird one-offs
- Be the go-to person for your clients - the one they message when something looks off or they need a sanity check
- Work closely with our product team to make our AI agents smarter (you'll spot edge cases before anyone else)
Who you are
- You've got a solid background in bookkeeping, audit, or controlling
- You're detail oriented and the kind of person who spots a mis-booked entry at a glance
- You actually enjoy working with clients - not just spreadsheets
- You're comfortable in a startup where the playbook is still being written
- Bonus points for experience with Xero and prior exposure to startups or SaaS
