Purpose of the Role
The Senior Finance Manager is the most senior finance professional in the business, reporting directly to the Managing Director and leading the performance of the Finance function.
The role safeguards financial control and reporting accuracy, while providing the commercial insight and financial challenge needed to support effective decision making across the business, with particular focus on profitability, margins, work in progress, project and job performance, working capital, cash flow and forecasting.
Finance is expected to operate as a business partner rather than purely a reporting function, using financial and operational information to identify trends, highlight areas requiring attention, and provide clear analysis and recommendations that improve business performance.
The role combines financial control, management accounting and commercial finance, with the ability to work across large volumes of financial and operational data in a project and service led environment. It also carries responsibility for developing the Finance team and improving systems, processes, reporting and the use of technology and automation.
The role additionally provides financial and commercial oversight of the Purchasing function, working closely with the Strategic Purchasing Manager to support cost management, supplier performance and wider margin and cash objectives.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
