Senior Finance Manager / Financial Controller

Hertford, Hertfordshire
£60,000-£65,000 + benefits
Permanent
Office based

I'm working with a growing manufacturing and production Hertfordshire business looking for a genuinely hands-on Finance Manager or Financial Controller to work closely with the Finance Director and take significant ownership across the day-to-day finance function.

This isn't a role where you'll simply produce a set of numbers and pass them upwards. They need someone who understands how a business actually operates, can get underneath the numbers, manage and develop a small finance team and be comfortable challenging or supporting senior stakeholders when required.

It's likely to suit someone currently operating as a Finance Manager, Group Finance Manager, Financial Controller or strong No.2 to an FD within an SME or operational business.

The Senior Finance Manager Role

You'll have broad responsibility across the finance function, including:

  • Ownership of monthly management accounts and financial reporting
  • Leading budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow planning
  • Producing useful analysis for the FD and wider leadership team
  • Building and improving Excel-based reporting and financial models
  • Managing and developing members of the finance team
  • Reviewing controls and improving finance processes rather than simply inheriting them
  • Working closely with operational and non-finance teams across the business
  • Identifying financial or operational risks and helping resolve them
  • Supporting the FD on commercial projects and wider business decisions
  • Overseeing key compliance requirements and supporting year-end/audit activity

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What the Senior Finance Manager Will Be Doing

The strongest profiles will probably have developed through a broad SME finance environment where they've had to understand the whole finance function, rather than one narrow area.

You'll ideally have experience of:

  • Producing management accounts from end to end
  • Budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management
  • Managing or supervising a finance team
  • Working directly with an FD, MD or senior leadership team
  • Improving reporting, controls or existing finance processes
  • Advanced Excel and confident financial analysis
  • Working in a fast-moving operational environment

Experience within sectors such as energy, environmental services, construction, aggregates, logistics, manufacturing and production, engineering or another operationally led business would translate particularly well. ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification is useful, but I'm equally interested in people who have built strong hands-on experience and can demonstrate that they have effectively been running a finance function already.

The Opportunity

This is a good move for someone who enjoys being close to the business and wants more ownership rather than another layer of reporting.

You'll work directly with an experienced Finance Director, have visibility across the wider organisation and join a business where there's genuine scope to improve how finance operates as it continues to grow.

Package:
£60,000-£65,000 depending on experience, 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, private healthcare, pension and on-site parking.
The role is office based in Hertford, Hertfordshire.
