I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What you'll do

  • The store estate - Lease events, closures, impairments, onerous contracts and provisions, with DCF modelling of future cash flows underneath them. You make the judgement calls, and you write the property disclosures that go into the annual report and financial statements.
  • The team - Lead 4 direct reports (inside a wider team of 15). They want a reviewer and coach who can guide the team whilst operating strategically. Someone with the standing to challenge and influence senior executives but who can drop in and be hands-on in support of the team where needed. You need to be able to play both roles.
  • The wider remit - Property and intercompany statutory accounts, plus the corporate cost areas, which include the group's single biggest cost base. Alteryx and automation work sits here too.

What you'll need

  • Qualified accountant with strong technical accounting behind you. Likely trained in practice but we’re open if the right technical skills are there.
  • IFRS 16 and property accounting. That's the part with no flex in it. And must be within a large, complex multi-site business (ideally listed)
  • A record of coaching qualified accountants and building technical capability
  • To be able to commute to Manchester 3 days a week
