Job Description
IPS Finance is delighted to be recruiting on behalf of a well-established, family-owned business based in Harrogate. With a reputation built on quality, exceptional customer service, and long-standing relationships with both customers and suppliers, the business has enjoyed steady, sustainable growth and is now looking to appoint an experienced Finance Manager to lead its finance function.
This is a varied and hands-on role offering the opportunity to take full responsibility for the day-to-day financial operations of the business. Working closely with the wider team, you will play a key role in supporting business performance, providing accurate financial information, and helping to drive continued success. This position would suit a proactive and dependable finance professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys working autonomously, and is looking to make a genuine contribution within a successful and growing organisation.
Key Responsibilities of Finance Manager
- Take full ownership of the day-to-day finance function, maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring the smooth running of all accounting processes.
- Manage the sales and purchase ledgers, including customer and supplier reconciliations, debtor and creditor management, and monitoring customer credit limits.
- Complete all bookkeeping activities using Sage 50 Accounts, ensuring transactions are processed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Process and reconcile bank accounts, petty cash, sales invoices, customer payments, credit notes, purchase orders, supplier payments, and monthly bank reconciliations.
- Prepare and process payroll, pension contributions, HMRC submissions, and VAT returns, ensuring compliance with all statutory deadlines.
- Oversee payments relating to company vehicles, utilities, insurance, accreditations, and other business expenses.
- Prepare monthly Management Accounts, including Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports, providing accurate financial information to support business decision-making.
- Produce financial reports and analysis for senior management, including monitoring company and product profitability.
- Monitor stock purchasing and inventory levels to support budget control and efficient stock management.
- Maintain and improve financial controls, ensuring company procedures are followed, identifying opportunities to reduce costs, minimise errors, and strengthen internal processes.
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations, company policies, insurance requirements, and key business accreditations.
- Manage and troubleshoot Sage 50 Accounts, supporting system improvements and implementing product and pricing updates where required.
- Supervise and support the Accounts Assistant, providing guidance, training, and day-to-day direction.
- Provide HR and office administration support, including holiday and absence recording, onboarding new employees, supporting recruitment and employee relations processes, ordering office supplies, and overseeing office facilities.
- Support the Directors with ad hoc financial analysis, business projects, and operational tasks as required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
