Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer – Motor Control

I’m working with a rapidly growing UK engineering business developing high-performance electric drive and electromechanical technology.
They’re looking for an experienced Embedded Firmware Engineer to take a senior, hands-on role developing the firmware at the heart of their motor control products.
This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys working close to the hardware. You'll be developing real-time embedded firmware, implementing motor control algorithms, bringing up new hardware and working alongside electronics, controls and test engineers to get the maximum performance from the system.
This isn't an integration-only position — they need someone who genuinely understands what is happening inside the motor controller and has previously developed motor control firmware themselves.
What you'll be working on:
- Developing embedded firmware for three-phase brushless motor control
- Implementing and optimising field-oriented control (FOC) and commutation strategies
- Developing deterministic, real-time control software in C/C++
- Working with timers, interrupts, ADCs, DMA and microcontroller peripherals
- Current and voltage sensing, signal processing and protection strategies
- Hardware bring-up and debugging alongside electronics engineers
- Developing communication interfaces including CAN, SPI, UART and I²C
- Improving telemetry, diagnostics and fault handling
- Supporting bootloaders and robust field-update capabilities
- Using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and debug tools to investigate hardware/software issues
- Working with test engineers to tune and validate performance against real-world measurements
- Helping influence the future architecture of the embedded firmware platform

What we're looking for:
You'll have strong commercial experience developing embedded firmware for electric motors, motor drives or another demanding real-time control application.
Crucially, we're interested in engineers who have actually developed three-phase brushless motor control firmware, rather than solely configuring an existing vendor solution.

Strong experience with bare-metal C/C++, FOC, real-time embedded systems and hardware bring-up will be particularly relevant.
Experience with areas such as sensorless control, high-speed motors, power electronics, STM32, RTOS, model-based development or safety-critical embedded systems would also be valuable.
Potential backgrounds could include electric vehicles, robotics, industrial drives, aerospace, motorsport, automation or other advanced electromechanical products.
This would particularly suit an engineer who wants significant technical ownership, enjoys working directly with physical hardware and wants to help shape an embedded platform as the company's product range grows.
