Senior Firmware Engineer | Defence | Reading
We’re looking for a Senior Firmware Engineer to develop low-level embedded software for high-performance electronic systems operating in demanding real-world environments.
This is a hands-on engineering role working closely with electronics, controls and test engineers. You’ll have ownership across the firmware lifecycle, from hardware bring-up and low-level interfaces through real-time control, debugging, validation and production.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Strong commercial embedded firmware development experience
- Excellent Embedded C / C++ skills
- Bare-metal and/or RTOS development
- Experience developing firmware directly against custom electronic hardware
- Microcontroller peripherals, interfaces and low-level drivers
- Hardware bring-up and board-level debugging
- Real-time embedded systems and timing-sensitive applications
- Strong debugging skills using JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analysers or similar
- Experience taking firmware beyond prototyping into robust production systems
- Comfortable working closely with electronics and control engineers

Desirable:
- ARM-based microcontrollers
- Motor control, power electronics or other real-time control applications
- CAN and other embedded communication protocols
- Bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms
- Safety-critical or high-reliability embedded development
- Automated hardware / firmware testing
- Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing
- MATLAB / Simulink or Model-Based Design exposure
- Aerospace, robotics, automotive or other high-performance embedded systems
