Are you an experienced regulatory lawyer looking for an opportunity to lead, influence and shape the future of in-house legal services?
As the Senior Lawyer for case preparation, you'll lead and develop a team responsible for overseeing fitness to practise cases held by our External Legal Providers (ELPs), substantive order reviews and fraudulent or incorrect entry investigations. Acting as a senior source of legal expertise, you'll provide advice on complex, sensitive and high-risk matters while ensuring cases are progressed efficiently, proportionately and in line with regulatory best practice.
This role is ideal for a lawyer who enjoys balancing strategic thinking with operational delivery, building strong stakeholder relationships and driving continuous improvement across legal services. As a member of our senior legal team, you'll help shape the future direction of our Fitness to Practise Legal Services function during an exciting period of growth and transformation alongside the other senior lawyers in the department.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing senior legal advice on complex fitness to practise, substantive order review and fraudulent or incorrect entry cases.
- Overseeing the quality, performance and contractual delivery of External Legal Providers.
- Managing legal risk and acting as a key escalation point for complex and high-profile matters.
- Using data and management information to drive performance, governance and service improvement.
- Leading and motivating a team of legal professionals, supporting their development and ensuring high-quality legal decision making.
- Building effective relationships with senior stakeholders across the organisation, external legal providers and the Tribunal Service.
- Contributing to strategy, policy development and operational improvement initiatives across Fitness to Practise Legal Services.

Person Specification
We are looking for candidates that have:
- A current practising certificate as a Solicitor or Barrister.
- At least 5 years' PQE, including relevant experience within professional regulation or a comparable regulatory environment.
- Strong experience advising on complex legal, evidential and procedural issues.
- A commitment to overseeing a high performing in-house legal team, to work in partnership with other functions across fitness to practise.
- Excellent technical legal skills and the ability to supervise and support other lawyers.
- Proven leadership skills with experience managing and developing high-performing teams.
- Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
- A pragmatic, solutions-focused approach and the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- An understanding of the legal, operational and other risks for the business, which influence strategy.
