OCUSHIELD

Senior Founding Engineer

Full-time · Fully remote · Remote-first team · EU-based · Healthtech SaaS

Ocushield is a UK-based healthtech company making preventive eye care more accessible. We’re profitable on the consumer side (screen filters sold globally), and we’ve built a digital eye-screening platform used by corporate clients and health insurers to protect their employees’ and members’ vision. Our paying customers already include AIG, Wise, BlackRock, and three UK health insurers. Our plan over the next 12 months is to double the digital ARR.

Our data is health-adjacent, our customers are enterprise and regulated, and our engineering standards reflect that. Expect UK and EU GDPR, enterprise security reviews, SSO negotiations with partner IT teams, and the discipline that comes with handling data real people care about.

We’re bootstrapped and profitable. No Series A, no burn-to-grow mandate, no outside clock. We hire slowly and we pay what we can defend.

The role at a glance

Reports to: Dhruvin Patel, Founder & CEO. Works alongside: Raj (Clinical Innovation Lead), Ali (Product Advisor and Senior PM at Google), and our part-time Senior Product Manager and UX/UI Designer. A fully distributed team across the UK and Europe. There is no office. Inherits: A new platform currently being delivered by a specialist external build team on a modern TypeScript stack. You won’t be building it from scratch. You’ll take it over on handover, make it yours, and build the next three years of Ocushield on top of it. Owns: The engineering function. You decide standards, roadmap trade-offs, when and who to hire next, and how we handle every partner integration.

Why this role exists

Our current digital platform has reached what a no-code stack and part-time delivery can give us. It works, it ships, our customers love it. It is now the limiting factor on everything we want to do next: enterprise SSO, partner APIs, end-user account management, results history, better reporting, and the ML and AI work on top of our proprietary eye-performance score.

This is the first full-time engineering hire the company has ever made. The person we hire owns the engineering function and defines what engineering at Ocushield looks like for the next five years.

What you’ll do

First 90 days

  • Take ownership of the new platform from the external build team. Read every line, meet every assumption, understand every trade-off they made.
  • Run clients still on our current platform in parallel while you cut them over at a pace that keeps every paying customer happy.
  • Set the standards for testing, review, deployment, and observability that will carry the business through the next 10 engineers.
  • Write the 12-month engineering roadmap with Raj and Dhruvin.

Months 3–12

  • Lead the delivery of corporate SSO (SAML and OIDC via AWS Cognito), end-user account management with results history, partner-facing APIs, and secure reporting flows.
  • Own the integration path with each enterprise client: Wise, AIG, BlackRock, and the health insurers in the pipeline.
  • Define how we handle UK and EU GDPR obligations as our data footprint grows.
  • Start layering ML and AI work onto the eye-performance score, in partnership with Raj.
  • Decide when and who to hire as engineer #2.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What success looks like twelve months in

  • Every paying customer has been cut over to the new platform. Zero regressions, zero downtime they noticed.
  • Corporate SSO and end-user account management are live and in use by at least three enterprise clients.
  • Partner-facing API is published, documented, and in use by at least one health insurer.
  • Engineering standards, review process, deployment pipeline, and observability are in place and documented.
  • The platform has supported the ARR doubling without becoming the thing we worry about.
  • You’ve made a confident call on whether engineer #2 is needed, and if so, who.

The stack

Defined and in build. Not up for negotiation on day one, but very much up for discussion as you grow the system:

  • Database: PostgreSQL.
  • Backend API: NestJS with Prisma, documented with Swagger / OpenAPI.
  • Auth: AWS Cognito, with corporate SSO over SAML and OIDC.
  • Front end: React.js with Vite.
  • Admin panel: React.js.
  • Infrastructure: AWS.
  • QA: Unit testing (Jest), manual functional testing, cross-device testing.

Who we’re looking for

Non-negotiables

  • Seven or more years of professional software engineering, with real time as a tech lead or senior engineer at a startup or scale-up. Not just as an IC at a large company.
  • Deep TypeScript and Node.js experience in production. NestJS and Prisma specifically are a strong plus; if you’ve not used them you need to be fluent enough in the ecosystem to pick them up in days, not weeks.
  • Strong PostgreSQL: schema design, migrations, query performance.
  • Strong React.js, ideally with Vite.
  • Production experience with AWS and comfort setting up Cognito, SAML and OIDC SSO, and infrastructure-as-code (CDK, Terraform, or similar).
  • Experience taking over a codebase built by someone else and making it yours.
  • Experience in healthtech, insurance, fintech, or another regulated or sensitive-data environment. You will need to walk into a conversation with Bupa’s security team and be credible.
  • You code with AI as part of your daily workflow. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot. Whichever stack you prefer. The whole team uses these tools and we want someone who codes with AI, not someone who delegates to it. The judgement, the architecture, the review, and the accountability for what ships are yours. AI is a tool you apply on top of that: faster prototyping, boilerplate, exploration, getting unstuck. If you don’t already work this way, this role isn’t the one.
  • Based in the European Union, European Economic Area, or United Kingdom, with the right to work locally. This is a hard requirement. We’re not able to consider candidates outside these regions for this role.

Strong bonuses

  • Clinical, medical device, or MHRA / CE-regulated software exposure.
  • Applied ML or AI product experience. Shipping ML or AI into a production product, not just using AI tools to code. Relevant to our roadmap on the proprietary eye-performance score, where Python and the usual ML stack come in.
  • Experience hiring and managing engineers. Not required on day one, but you’ll do it in year two.

Compensation

  • Base salary: €55,000 – €85,000 per year, benchmarked to your location. We pay well for your local market, not Silicon Valley numbers.
  • Holiday: 25 days plus local public holidays.
  • Remote: Fully remote. See “How we work” below for what remote looks like here.
  • Where this role grows to: VP Engineering or CTO as the business scales. First-engineer seats earn the first-engineer trajectory.

Why join Ocushield

  • You’d own it. Not a seat on a team. The engineering function of the whole company.
  • Real users, real revenue. You’re not pitching an idea. The business is profitable and the digital platform has paying enterprise customers right now.
  • Health that matters. Eye strain affects nine out of ten screen workers. The product we’re building prevents real problems.
  • Boring in the right ways. No burn-rate panic. No pivot every quarter. Bootstrapped means we live within our means and only make bets we can afford.
  • Interesting in the right ways. A proprietary algorithm, patents being filed, enterprise sales to insurers, and a credible path to meaningful equity payout.

This role is probably not for you if

  • You want FAANG salaries or a Series B rocketship. We’re neither.
  • You want a large team around you from day one. For the first 6–12 months, the team is you plus the external build partners plus a part-time PM.
  • You want someone else to deal with partners, security reviews, and customer onboarding. You’ll be in those conversations.
  • You can’t name a system you’ve owned end-to-end in production for 18+ months, or you talk about technology in the abstract and struggle to describe specific decisions and trade-offs.
  • You’re dismissive of the existing consumer side of the business. It funds everything.
  • Our working language is English, and most of your writing and video calls will be in it.

How we work

  • Remote by design. The team was built this way from day one. There is no London HQ you’ll quietly be pulled back to, no two-tier dynamic between office and remote people, and no hybrid creep.
  • Written-first and async-first. Decisions and specs live in writing so people in different time zones can act on them without a meeting.
  • Few meetings, well-run. Expect two to three recurring calls a week: product sync, founder check-in, demo. Otherwise your time is yours.
  • Together in person when it matters. Annual in-person team
