FPGA Development Engineer
Location: Farnborough, Hampshire
Working pattern: Four days onsite
Salary: Competitive + Bonus
Employment Type: Full-time, permanent
We are looking for an experienced FPGA Development Engineer to join a multidisciplinary engineering team working on secure digital design solutions for cyber and information-assurance applications. This role offers the opportunity to work across the full FPGA development lifecycle, from requirements capture and architecture through to implementation, verification, hardware integration, and production. You will contribute to both standard products and bespoke customer solutions involving industry-standard and custom interfaces and protocols.
The Role
As an FPGA Development Engineer, you will take technical ownership of FPGA solutions across a range of complex development projects. Working closely with the wider engineering team and Project Managers, you will help define requirements, develop architectures, implement programmable-logic solutions, and support integration and test. You will work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment alongside engineers from FPGA, embedded software, hardware, systems, and project-management disciplines. The role may also include coordinating other FPGA engineers, supporting external suppliers, contributing to proposals, and helping shape future technology roadmaps.
Key Responsibilities
- Own FPGA solution delivery from requirements capture and architecture through development, verification, hardware integration, and production.
- Lead requirements elicitation and translate system needs into clear FPGA implementation requirements.
- Define FPGA architectures in collaboration with the wider development team.
- Work with Project Managers to develop project plans, define milestones, and ensure delivery remains on schedule.
- Design, develop, and verify FPGA solutions using VHDL.
- Develop test benches and support verification, system integration, and hardware debugging.
- Optimise designs for performance, power dissipation, reliability, and resource utilisation.
- Investigate technical issues and support root-cause analysis during integration and test.
- Coordinate FPGA design activity where required and provide technical guidance to other FPGA engineers.
- Manage technical interfaces with external FPGA, IP, and technology suppliers.
- Apply configuration-management practices to maintain control of HDL source code, design data, and released products.
- Support proposal generation, technical estimates, and bid activity when required.
- Contribute to technical papers, white papers, and future technology roadmaps.
- Work effectively with hardware, embedded software, systems engineering, and project-management teams.
- Support the development of secure digital design solutions for cyber and information-assurance applications.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
