Contract: Permanent, Full-time

Salary: £80,000 - £90,000 per annum + an extensive benefits scheme

Following the launch of Life Services Group, we're investing heavily in technology and looking for multiple Senior Full Stack Engineers to help shape the next generation of products and services across our organisation.
These are senior, hands-on engineering roles with the opportunity to build and evolve business-critical platforms that support our Funeral Services operations, power exceptional colleague and customer experiences, and help establish the technology foundations for our newly created Legal Services division.
You'll play a key role in solving complex technical challenges, influencing architecture and engineering standards, and delivering products that have a genuine impact on hundreds of colleagues and thousands of customers across the UK. Whether you're improving existing platforms, creating industry-leading internal tooling, or helping launch entirely new products and services, you'll have the autonomy and influence to make a lasting contribution to a business undergoing significant transformation.
What You Will Be Doing
You will play an influential role within our engineering function, combining hands-on development with technical leadership, mentoring and collaboration.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading complex technical implementations and designing effective, scalable solutions.
- Writing high-quality code for challenging and sometimes ambiguous problems.
- Helping to define and influence the technical vision for our systems and services.
- Balancing delivery priorities with long-term maintainability, performance and scalability.
- Leading technical improvements, including migrations, automation and the introduction of new tooling.
- Responding effectively to critical incidents and business-critical technical challenges.
- Using discovery, experimentation and proof-of-concepts to shape technical direction.
- Improving engineering efficiency through best practice, standardisation and automation.
- Leading standards across observability, performance, testing and system quality.
- Communicating risks, options and technical trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Mentoring junior and mid-level engineers and creating opportunities for others to develop.
- Contributing to a positive engineering culture built around quality, knowledge-sharing, psychological safety and no-blame learning.

You bring genuine technical depth
You have significant experience designing and delivering complex software systems and are comfortable taking technical ownership within a team or domain.
You will bring expertise in full stack development using JavaScript or TypeScript, Node.js, and React or Angular, together with strong knowledge of systems architecture, API design and databases. You will also understand the importance of observability, monitoring, testing, performance, security, accessibility and modern DevOps practices.
You are comfortable working with ambiguous requirements, managing technical debt and making thoughtful decisions that balance immediate customer or business needs with the health of the wider technology estate.
You are an excellent communicator and collaborator
Great technology is built by teams. You can explain complex technical concepts in a clear and practical way, helping non-technical stakeholders understand options, risks and trade-offs.
You are comfortable leading technical discussions, discovery workshops and postmortems, and you approach disagreements constructively. You also enjoy sharing knowledge, mentoring other engineers and helping those around you succeed.
Essential Experience
What we are looking for
- Significant experience designing and delivering complex software systems.
- Proven experience leading technical direction for a team, product or technical domain.
- Strong full-stack development experience using JavaScript or TypeScript, Node.js, and React or Angular.
- Strong knowledge of systems architecture, APIs and database design.
- Experience of CI/CD pipelines, testing strategies and modern DevOps practices.
- Knowledge of observability, monitoring and incident management.
- A strong understanding of performance optimisation, security and accessibility.
- Experience mentoring and supporting engineers at different stages of their careers.
- The ability to operate effectively through ambiguity, complexity and high-pressure situations.
- A degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- The ability to work from our Maidenhead office for a minimum of three days each week, with occasional travel as required.
