SENIOR GALLERY ASSISTANT
Park Gallery, Montpellier, Cheltenham
Permanent, part-time – 18 hours per week, normally over 3 days
£14,040 per annum (£15 per hour)
Park Gallery is an independent contemporary art gallery in the heart of Montpellier, Cheltenham, owned and run by a husband-and-wife team. We represent a varied collection of established and emerging artists and pride ourselves on offering a personal, welcoming experience for both customers and artists.
We are looking for a confident, personable and reliable Senior Gallery Assistant to become an important part of the Park Gallery team and play a key role in the day-to-day running of the gallery.
On your working days, you will often be the person responsible for the gallery — welcoming customers, handling sales, communicating with artists and making sure everything runs smoothly.
The role goes beyond day-to-day retail. We are looking for someone who enjoys dealing with people, is comfortable working independently, and is confident using their own judgement and initiative.
THE ROLE
Typical responsibilities will include:
- Welcoming and assisting customers
- Handling artwork sales and customer enquiries
- Answering telephone calls and emails
- Communicating professionally with artists
- Receiving and recording new artwork
- Maintaining accurate gallery and artwork records
- Creating and printing artwork price tickets
- Keeping the gallery clean, organised and well presented
- Helping with routine administration, social media and website/product updates
- Opening and closing the gallery

ABOUT YOU
Previous gallery experience is not essential.
We are more interested in finding someone who is:
Essential
- Confident and comfortable talking to customers
- Warm, friendly and professional
- Organised, dependable and trustworthy
- Able to work independently and use sound judgement
- Strong attention to detail
- Computer literate and confident learning new systems
- Able to communicate well with customers, artists and suppliers
- Happy to pitch in with the varied day-to-day needs of a small independent gallery
- Able to work with some flexibility across a Tuesday–Saturday rota, including some Saturdays
Desirable
- A good visual eye and an instinct for presentation and display
- An interest in art, design or the creative industries
- Experience in retail, hospitality, customer service, administration or another client-facing role
- Previous gallery experience
- Experience with social media or website/product updates

HOURS AND WORKING PATTERN
The role is 18 hours per week, normally worked over 3 days.
The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am–4.30pm. Working days will vary according to a rota, normally planned around four weeks in advance.
Saturday working is a normal part of the role, shared with the owner. Occasional bank holiday working may also be required.
Some flexibility will be needed for two full weeks each year when full gallery cover is required, as well as occasional evening events and additional agreed hours around busy periods or art fairs.
Any additional hours will either be paid at the normal hourly rate or offset within the same working week where appropriate.
PAY AND HOLIDAY
- £14,040 per annum (£15 per hour)
- 5.6 weeks’ paid annual leave (statutory entitlement)
