The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior to early Principal Geo-environmental Consultant to join our Southampton-based Infrastructure & Environment team in the Southeast.
This role would suit an experienced geo-environmental professional with strong technical capability, sound commercial awareness and the confidence to take a lead role in the delivery of contaminated land and ground engineering projects.
Our team provides contaminated land and ground engineering services primarily to the infrastructure and buildings sectors. We work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams to deliver high-quality, commercially focused and value-driven solutions that support the planning, construction and redevelopment of sites across the Southeast.

About The Role
As a Senior / Principal Geo-environmental Consultant, you will take a lead role in the delivery of contaminated land and ground engineering projects, from initial desk study and investigation through to assessment, remediation and verification.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Leading the technical delivery of geo-environmental and contaminated land projects and taking ownership of discrete projects or work packages.
- Planning, specifying and managing ground investigations, including coordinating subcontractors, laboratory testing and monitoring programmes.
- Providing appropriate oversight of ground investigation activities, with a focus on technical direction, interpretation and project delivery rather than routine site supervision.
- Preparing and reviewing technical reports, including Phase 1 Desk Studies, factual and interpretive Ground Investigation Reports, controlled waters and human health risk assessments, remediation strategies and verification reports.
- Developing and reviewing conceptual site models and assessing source-pathway-receptor linkages.
- Interpreting soil, gas and groundwater monitoring data and identifying key environmental and ground-related risks.
- Developing pragmatic and proportionate risk management and remediation strategies.
- Providing technical advice to clients, project managers, contractors, regulators and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Attending client and project meetings and confidently communicating technical issues, risks and recommendations.
- Coordinating inputs from junior colleagues, subcontractors and external specialists.
- Reviewing technical outputs and ensuring work is delivered to the required technical and quality standards.
- Managing project programmes, resources, risks and budgets to support successful and profitable project delivery.
- Preparing and contributing to fee proposals, scopes of work and commercial opportunities.
- Identifying opportunities to develop existing client relationships and contribute to the growth of the team and wider business.
- Mentoring and supporting junior colleagues, providing constructive feedback and helping to develop technical capability across the team.
- Contributing to workload planning and resource coordination.
- Supporting the development of team members through regular guidance, coaching and knowledge sharing.
- Where appropriate, undertaking line management responsibilities, including one-to-ones, wellbeing and workload conversations, objective setting and performance and development reviews.
- Promoting a strong health, safety, wellbeing and environmental culture across project delivery.
- Ensuring project risks are appropriately identified, planned for and managed throughout the project lifecycle.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Substantial relevant experience within the geo-environmental industry, ideally gained within a consultancy environment.
- A proven track record of delivering contaminated land and/or ground engineering projects.
- Experience planning, specifying and managing ground investigations at an appropriate level, including coordination of subcontractors, laboratory testing and monitoring programmes.
- Strong working knowledge of relevant British Standards, industry guidance and regulatory frameworks, with the ability to apply these when developing scopes, reviewing data, undertaking assessments and advising clients.
- The ability to lead geo-environmental assignments from initial desk study and ground investigation through to interpretation, risk assessment, remediation strategy and verification.
- Experience reviewing and interpreting gas, groundwater and soil monitoring data and identifying appropriate next steps.
- Strong technical knowledge of contaminated land assessment and risk management.
- Experience developing conceptual site models and assessing source-pathway-receptor linkages.
- The ability to develop pragmatic and proportionate risk management and remediation solutions.
- Confident client-facing skills, with experience liaising with clients, regulators, subcontractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong technical report writing and review skills, with the ability to produce clear, defensible and commercially aware outputs suitable for clients, regulators and planning submissions.
- Experience reviewing the technical work of others and providing constructive feedback to support quality and development.
- Experience mentoring and developing junior colleagues and contributing to a positive and collaborative team culture.
- The willingness and capability to undertake line management responsibilities where required.
- Strong project management and commercial awareness, including experience preparing or contributing to fee proposals, managing budgets, tracking progress and supporting profitable project delivery.
- A proactive and independent approach, with the judgement to identify project risks, manage competing priorities and seek support where appropriate.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence presenting technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- A strong commitment to health, safety, wellbeing and environmental protection.
- Chartered status or working towards chartership with a relevant professional body would be advantageous.
- A Full UK Driving Licence.
Advantageous But Not Essential
- CSCS Card.
- SMSTS, IOSH or equivalent site supervisor qualification.
- First Aid training.
- CAT and Genny training.
- Experience working on major infrastructure, buildings or development projects.
- Experience engaging with regulators and stakeholders on contaminated land or environmental risk matters.
- Experience contributing to business development, client account management or winning new work.

Qualifications
A BSc, MSc, BEng or higher qualification in a relevant discipline such as:
- Geology
- Environmental Science
- Civil Engineering
- Engineering Geology
- Hydrogeology
- Earth Sciences Or another relevant subject
