Company Description
DAM Geotechnical Services Ltd is an established specialist ground investigation and consultancy company based in Dumbarton, providing geotechnical, geophysical and geo-environmental services to the civil engineering and construction sectors throughout the UK. DAM undertakes projects ranging from small-scale developments to major, multidisciplinary infrastructure schemes, tailoring investigations to the particular ground conditions, development proposals and requirements of each client.
Our work combines conventional intrusive ground investigation with specialist geophysical techniques, environmental assessment, laboratory testing and engineering interpretation to provide practical, evidence-based solutions. DAM provides services including site investigation, environmental risk assessment, contamination assessment, geophysical surveying, laboratory analysis and Coal Mining Risk Assessments.
We place particular emphasis on integrating geotechnical, geo-environmental and geophysical information where this adds value to a project. This integrated approach allows us to develop practical investigation strategies for complex sites, including those where conventional investigation methods may be constrained by access, environmental considerations or difficult ground conditions.
Role Description
We are looking for an experienced Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer to join our team in Dumbarton and take a leading role in the planning, delivery, interpretation and reporting of geo-environmental ground investigations.
The role will involve managing projects from initial desk study and investigation design through site works, laboratory testing, environmental risk assessment and interpretative reporting. A key part of the position will be the assessment of potentially contaminated land, including development and refinement of Conceptual Site Models, assessment of source-pathway-receptor relationships, evaluation of risks to human health and controlled waters, and the development of appropriate remediation recommendations where required.
The successful candidate will plan and supervise intrusive site investigations, undertake soil, groundwater and ground-gas sampling and monitoring, schedule appropriate laboratory analysis, interpret environmental and geotechnical data and prepare high-quality factual and interpretative reports.

- Managing geo-environmental projects from proposal and investigation design through to final reporting.
- Preparing and reviewing Phase I desk studies, preliminary risk assessments and Conceptual Site Models.
- Designing and supervising Phase II intrusive investigations.
- Assessing contaminated soil, groundwater, ground gas and other potential environmental constraints.
- Developing sampling and laboratory testing schedules appropriate to the site history, Conceptual Site Model and proposed development.
- Undertaking and reviewing Generic Quantitative Risk Assessments and supporting more detailed assessment where appropriate.
- Developing practical remediation strategies and providing advice to clients, designers and contractors.
- Preparing clear, technically robust interpretative reports and recommendations.
- Coordinating geotechnical, geo-environmental and geophysical elements of multidisciplinary investigations where appropriate.
- Preparing project-specific risk assessments and method statements and working within DAM's Quality Assurance procedures.
- Liaising directly with clients, regulators, laboratories, contractors and other project stakeholders.
- Supporting and mentoring less-experienced members of the technical team.
- Contributing technical input to proposals, tenders and the continued development of DAM's geo-environmental services.
The position is primarily based from Dumbarton, with site work throughout Scotland and, where required, elsewhere in the UK. The business is actively seeking new premises closer to Glasgow. Occasional overnight stays and work away from home may therefore be required.
Qualifications and Experience
We are looking for someone with a strong practical and technical background in contaminated land and geo-environmental investigation. Ideally, candidates will have:
- A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or another relevant earth science or engineering discipline.
- Significant professional experience in geo-environmental consultancy, contaminated land assessment or ground investigation.
- Strong experience in the planning, supervision and interpretation of intrusive ground investigations.
- Good working knowledge of contaminated land assessment, including Conceptual Site Models, source-pathway-receptor assessment and environmental risk assessment.
- Experience assessing risks associated with soil contamination, groundwater, ground gas and vapour, together with an understanding of their implications for proposed developments.
- Experience selecting soil and water samples and specifying appropriate environmental laboratory analysis.
- Experience preparing Phase I and Phase II reports, remediation strategies and/or verification reporting.
- A sound understanding of current UK contaminated-land legislation, guidance and good practice.
- Strong technical report-writing skills and the ability to communicate technical findings clearly and proportionately to clients.
- The ability to manage several projects concurrently and take responsibility for programme, technical delivery and client communication.
- A practical approach to problem solving and the ability to develop investigation strategies appropriate to individual site constraints.
- Experience supervising and supporting junior engineers, geologists or environmental scientists.
- Strong organisational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- A full UK driving licence would be beneficial given the requirement for travel to project sites.
- Professional membership and Chartered status, or demonstrable progress towards Chartership, with an appropriate institution would be advantageous.
- Experience of geotechnical investigation or an understanding of geophysical investigation methods would also be beneficial, particularly given DAM's integrated approach to ground investigation.
