The Opportunity

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Geologist to join a well-established ground investigation and geotechnical business based in Wigan.

The role will involve supervising and supporting ground investigation projects from mobilisation through to completion, combining site delivery with geological logging, laboratory scheduling, technical reporting and client liaison.

The employer is an established multidisciplinary ground investigation and geotechnical specialist delivering projects across the UK.

The business supports projects across infrastructure, construction, residential, commercial and public-sector developments, with multidisciplinary teams including geologists, engineering geologists, environmental specialists, drilling crews and project managers.

The Role

As Senior Geologist, you will be responsible for the safe, accurate and efficient delivery of ground investigation works.

You will work closely with project managers, drilling teams, subcontractors, laboratories and clients to ensure investigations are completed in line with project specifications, programme requirements and technical standards.

The position will involve a combination of site-based work and office-based reporting, with travel to project sites as required.

Key Responsibilities: Ground Investigation Delivery

  • Supervise ground investigation projects across the UK
  • Assist with mobilisation and site set-up
  • Coordinate drilling crews, subcontractors and daily site activity
  • Monitor progress against programme and project requirements
  • Maintain accurate site records and daily documentation
  • Liaise with project managers, clients and technical teams
  • Ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with specification

Investigation Techniques

  • Supervise a range of ground investigation techniques, including:
    • Cable percussion drilling
    • Rotary drilling
    • Sonic drilling
    • Window sampling
    • Dynamic probing
    • Trial pits
    • In-situ testing
    • Geophysical surveys

Geological Logging & Sampling

  • Undertake soil and rock logging in accordance with current geotechnical standards
  • Prepare borehole, trial pit and window sample logs
  • Select samples for geotechnical and environmental laboratory testing
  • Prepare and manage laboratory testing schedules
  • Monitor sample recovery and groundwater strikes
  • Review field records for accuracy and completeness
  • Ensure samples are labelled, recorded and handled correctly

Technical & Reporting Support

  • Process site and laboratory data
  • Prepare factual ground investigation reports
  • Contribute to Phase 1 desk studies where required
  • Assist with interpretative reporting
  • Review geological maps and published geological information
  • Highlight unexpected ground conditions or technical concerns
  • Prepare plans, logs, appendices and technical documentation
  • Provide clear site information to project managers and reporting teams

Project & Client Support

  • Liaise directly with clients and project stakeholders
  • Support project planning and delivery
  • Assist with project timescales and resource coordination
  • Support junior geologists and site staff
  • Assist with technical reviews and quality control
  • Contribute to maintaining strong client relationships

About You

We are seeking a candidate with UK ground investigation experience who is comfortable taking responsibility for site supervision and technical delivery.

You will work independently, supervising intrusive investigations, producing accurate geological logs and maintaining high standards of site documentation.

Good communication, organisation and attention to detail will be important, along with the ability to work effectively with project managers, drilling teams, subcontractors and clients.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Earth Science or a related discipline
  • Proven UK ground investigation experience
  • Experience supervising intrusive ground investigation works
  • Strong soil and rock logging capability
  • Experience preparing laboratory testing schedules
  • Experience producing factual ground investigation reports
  • Site health and safety awareness
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK
