Role Description
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer is a full-time, office-based and occasional on-site role based in Coleraine, responsible for leading and delivering geotechnical site investigations and associated analysis. The role involves:
- Planning and supervising fieldwork
- Assessing soil and rock conditions
- Interpreting geotechnical and environmental data to inform design and construction decisions

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer prepares technical reports, foundation design recommendations, and risk assessments, while ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget. Daily tasks include:
- Collaborating with engineering geology and laboratory teams
- Mentoring junior staff
- Liaising with clients and contractors
- Supporting tender returns
The role also requires maintaining high standards of quality, regulatory compliance, and health and safety across all site and office activities.
Qualifications
- Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years experience post-qualification.
- Candidates should possess strong skills in site investigation and practical fieldwork supervision.
- Candidates should possess a solid understanding of soil mechanics and ground behaviour in a range of geological conditions.
- Candidates should possess expertise in geotechnical engineering, including analysis, design, and reporting.
- Candidates should possess knowledge of engineering geology and its application to ground risk assessment.
- Candidates should possess experience in foundation design for a variety of structures and ground conditions.
- Relevant degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, geology, or a closely related discipline (postgraduate qualification advantageous).
- Professional membership or working toward chartered status with a recognized engineering or geological institution is beneficial.
- Proficiency with geotechnical software and standard industry design codes and guidance.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and report-writing skills, with attention to detail and data quality.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to coordinate with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Demonstrated commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards in site operations.
- Full driving license and willingness to travel to sites across the UK and Ireland as required.
